  • Big Dave.

Haven't seen much of David Duval in recent years, then I was watching this here John Deere Classic last night. If it wasn't for the shades and cap i'd have thought it was Calcaveccia!!

He used to be one of the first main pro's advocating a fitness regime, what's happened?

I know his game tailed off and he went from missed cut to missed cut then the lay off for his wife's pregnancy. Was he that big before the lay off?

Anyway I never really liked him, always seemed a bit too stern faced and aloof for me...........then he won the Open at Lytham and made one of the best, most gracious and most humble winners' speeches i've heard in any sport.

I liked him after that and kept an eye out......... then the tailspin!

Once he broke his wrist snowboarding he has never been the same (obviously)....I have a buddy that belongs to the same country club he does in colorado...apparently he likes to indulge in marijuana quite a bit..His dad is skinny.hmmmmm

      Re: Big Dave.

simple explanation, Duval finally reached the goal of winning a major and realised he didnt feel any different to how he had felt before, so why kill yourself for it. They dont all have to be as driven as the Hogans, Nicklauses, Faldos and Woods of this world.

He had all the money he would ever need and realised that as great a thing as winning the greatest golf tournament in the world (face the facts USGA) was, it didnt change who he was so why blindly persue another???

As for the fat issue, even Gary Player admits that for many years he didnt enjoy the hard training only did it beacause it was good for his golf.

Fair enough. I think one of the main things in his winners' speech was emphasizing the fact it's only a game.

As a fan though it was a shame. When there's a player who really could have been gun slinging it out with Woods at the top of the sport, it feels like an opportunity missed.

Funny as we approach Birkdale this week I remember Ian Baker Finch playing a stormer to lift the claret Jug (29 out on one of the rounds) then the next ball he hits at an Open hooks across 2 fairways at St Andrews....
