  • Swing Lost Completely

    Played on Monday.

Nice golf for me - 85 (Par 70) despite a misbehaving pair of rescue woods and a couple of 3-putts which are almost unheard of for me; had some time after the round so went to the practice area and worked on the rescue problem.

Feeling good I snuck out on Wednesday for a quick practice bucket - couldn't hit a thing, literally on some swings and the rest just sprayed around totally at random.

Had another go, at lunchtime today, same thing, worse really because I got to the stage where I looked at the ball unsure how to set up let alone start a swing.

Not expecting much help here because I know I've just got to calm down and go back to simple basics to sort out the problem but I just wanted to vent at the golfing Gods for a moment and ask whether any of you have had a similar problem.

    Robin,

I think we all get these cases of the range yips at times. In my experience it is normally something related to taking the club away too much on the inside and not allowing the shoulders to make a full turn. If I get in any problems like that I take a 7 iron, stand with my feet close together and make some steady swings. This restores your tempo, keeps you centered and encourages a nice balanced swing. You can then open the feet and maintain the same swing feel.

    I hope this helps.

      Cheers Brian

Helps on at least two counts; first that I'm not alone in forgetting how to swing for no reason , second in that it gives me something simple to focus on (feet together, steady swing) which get me past the wtf do I do now feeling.

The cause sounds pretty plausible too in that any improvement I've made over the last year has been through swinging more in-to-out; could easily just started overdoing it.

Better had get it fixed though as in a weeks time I resume my never ending (but v. friendly) battle of wits and golf with my best mate and golfing buddy for the privilege of having the post round beers bought.

Damn, you too eh. My swing went on holiday at the end of last year and hasn't returned. Nice advice there Brian, i'm going to give it a try next time I hit the range.

Thanks Snowman, that's just the kind of positive encouragement I was looking for I was hoping more that it is a temporary blip!

The world is a nicer place today.

I was just (just ?) quitting on the through swing and not going through to a finish. Why? No idea. But much better today.

I told myself to take 10 easy but full wedges without worrying about a target and see what happens, then go for your drills if necessary - a similar idea I guess in that it was aimed to re-establish a relaxed balanced rhythm.

In the event the first was a towering, immense, 3-skills type shot so hey ho I just pressed on.

Yes Robin, can completely understand your frustrations...

My swing went to hell in a hand cart 3 of my past 4 rounds and I was absolutely stymied for a reason....

Could have been anything, including a change of brand of coffee in the club's kitchen......

And still not knowing what the cause (or causes) may have been, yesterday's round saw my ball striking and short game return and I posted my 2nd lowest score. A couple of silly doubles ensured it wouldn't be a new PB round.

A net 69 will see the handicapper after me again...

Glad to see your swing has come back as well...

                    Cheers
