  • How far do you really hit the ball ?

I always thought I hit my drives from 270 to 280 yards.

    But I don't.

This guy I played with on Monday had a trolley that, amongst other things, measured shots in yards. I was hitting it so well that he started measuring my drives.

My drives were as followed: 259, 255, 242 and 233 yards.

I was very surprized. The drives I was hitting were my Sunday best. Long and straight and my playing partners were impressed.

I guess as a low handicapper, I must be considered a short hitter !

Has anybody else measured their drives ?

    hi
yes i have i hit 250yards to 265 yards thats flight and carry. i tend to be about 10 yards longer than most of my playing partners and there only a couple of guys that are really long at my club ie in the 280 to 300.

I golf alot with all kinds of golfers, with different skill levels. Your distances are above average (247+/-) from what I see out on the course. Most (60%+) golfers I get paired with hit their drives in the 230+ range. Some think they hit it farther, but gps/lazers don't have an ego.

Most of the longer hitters (270-300) are playing on a tour some where.........if they are consistently accurate off the tee, and have a decent short game.

I get a kick out of it when a guy hits a great shot downn the middle, and proclaims it to be 290+/- yards. With out him knowing about it, I will sometimes mark his yardage with my gps, and it usually turns out to be only 240-250 yards. The problem arises when the hole is 400 on the score card, and with out looking at yardage markers, he figures he only has 110 to center of the green. He pulls his 110 club and comes up short.

That, or me, being an older golfer, landing my ball close to their drive, and they tell me I hit the ball pretty far for my age. GJS

Re: How far do you really hit the ball ?

I have no real idea how far I hit the ball with the driver. I seldom stop to figure it out. I've hit a few memorably long drives--long enough to make everybody else in my party go silent for a few seconds. But on average, I seem to hit about 20 yards farther than the other guys, when I get a reasonable clean shot at all. But I have no idea how far they hit either.

I honestly think the reason I get those 20 extra yards is that I use an 11.5 degree driver; the others are using 9.5 and 8.5. I don't know why they use such low lofts. We're all in our 50s, and some in early 60s, and none of us have really fast swing speeds. I think that to take advantage of lower loft you have to have a really fast swing speed to give the ball enough air time. I know I've tried their drivers from time to time, and the ball just returns to the ground too soon. But...I'm no expert and could well be wrong about this.

I average around 260 carry and roll, around 242 carry. That's not to say I can't pound it - I played last weekend and managed to win long drive with a 305 yard drive (450 yard par 5, I had 145 to the middle left - fairly straight hole).

Getting a golfer to admit they don't hit the ball 250 + is like getting them to admit they have a bad haircut

That ties up with some stats (taken from real life tracking & analysis) I saw which claim that the average "85 shooter" drives around 240yds. If anyone's interested Mr Average also hits 6 fairways and has 6 GIR with 37ppr.

So it's said many times but its still true once you're hitting some fairways and greens work on your short game and putting and then work some more - take 6 putts off that 37 and you're in the 80s

Re: How far do you really hit the ball ?

Well, it could depend on what time of year and what course. It's great for my ego when the hot, dry spell comes along and some of the courses I play have a clay base soil. On some holes, it's even better when the wind comes up.

Also, some courses are not certified yardage wise by the regulating authority, like USGA, OGA, etc. There are so many courses that embellish the yardages, to enhance the stature of the course. So a guy hits a drive on a hole that's supposed to be 430 yards, and he's got 100 yards left. He reckons he hit a 330 drive. Unfortunately the hole is nowhere near the yardage given, also the 100 yard plaque or stick is also likely suspect.

If you are saying that you hit a 310 yard drive, and that's because you hit that once, or under any of the foregoing circumstances, that is not being realistic.

Heck, I've often played well into the year and some of the distances were unbelievable, the downside being that the approach shots and chips to the green went proportionately as far

An eye-opener is to play a good course, which has certified yardages, and for example seeing what long iron or wood you have to hit into the green on a short 425 yard hole, after what you considered to be a fairly decent drive.

Frank Thomas says that most recreational golfers believe their average drive distance is about 250, however the true average is about 200.

yes i stated my 311yd drive was a one off and not my average

my 250/260 average distance comes from measuring every drive with a GPS device!

Yeah, yardage markers and scorecards can't be trusted. I thought I had smashed a 5w out to 260 once from using the scorecard and subtracting total yardage from the nearest marker. I went home and used google earth and used landmarks (a bunker and a tree next to the tee box) and it turned out to be 218.

There is only ONE interesting figure, and that is driver CARRY. Where the ball is located after bounce and roll is completely down to the surface conditions.

There is only ONE true way to measure driver carry ... it's called a Trackman launch monitor system.

Most people who ever get on one of those, leave in tears. ;-)

My Zelocity PureLaunch seems to be within 3 yards of my standard carries...

                            But I'd love a trackman!
