  • Need a drill to get my hands to release

When I take a one handed swing with a mid iron I contact the ball and follow through perfectly . As soon as I put my left hand on the club my swing is not as good. My hands get too far out in front and don't release resulting in poor contact.

    Suggestions??

    Thanks
    Bob

Have you played with the strength of the left hand? Go a bit stronger and see if this allows the release to be easier.

try the split grip. Grip with the left as normal but take your right hand grip much further down the shaft. Now swing to get the feeling of the proper release and then take your normal grip and hit some balls.

Re: Need a drill to get my hands to release

I like both of the suggested solutions - they're something we use in teaching often.

Something else you can try is what we can the "pre set" drill. It may be that the release of the hands is being caused by the wrists not hinging in the swing in the first place and therefore is actually nothing to release.

So before you go experiment with solutions, make sure you're hinging correctly first. Someone with a good eye could help you or you could video your swing and kind of self-diganose if you like.

          The drill work like this:
          (1) Set up to the ball in the normal way. Check your grip, stance and posture.
          (2) Without the hands travelling anywhere, hinge the wrists so that the club "flips" up so that the shaft is parrallel to the ground and the clubhead is toe-up.
          (3) Now execute a 3/4 swing from there keeping that hinge all the way to top and releasing it through impact.

Another drill on a similar thought is what I call the thumbs up drill. If you look at Luke Donald's swing as a prime example, when his arms are parallel to the ground on the way back, the club is vertical and his thumbs are pointing up (hence the thumbs up drill). When he gets to the mirror position on the follow through, when his arms are parallel to the ground, his club is vertical again and his thumbs are pointing upwards again.

It's a very easy drill to "feel" if you're good at learning concepts through feel. If you try this, don't turn the drill into a scooping excericse through impact, which it can easily do. But the feel of your thumbs up on the way up, thumbs down at impact and then thumbs up passed impact may well help you hinge the wrists and unhinge (release) all in 1 excercise. There are LOADS of youtube swing analyses on Luke's swing. Try to find one of those BizHib one's from the PGA Tour broadcasts, they're the only ones worth looking at.

I hope this helps you. Remember - just becuase you can't release, it doesn't mean the release is the problem, it may just be a knock-on effect.

            Graham

Thanks so much !!!!! You were absolutely right on. The reason I couldn't "release" was because my wrists were never really cocked enough in the first place. I did the drill and my club released perfectly.

Thanks again. I feel I have my game back
