  • Advice on a flat swing please

Can some one help me please, ive been playing golf now for over 3 yrs and i understand the basics but the one thing i have always had in my game is a flat backswing with no cocking of the wrists and as a result of this i have always sliced the ball/shanked the ball or even hooked the ball.Ive had a lot of lessons and recently had a video lesson showing me how bad my swing is,ive done drills but when it comes to playing on the course its a different swing all together and the same results come off!!!
Can everyone give me there opinion on this and any advice on how to take it to the course.??

    Hi,

Your lack of wrist cock should not cause you to slice, shank or hook. It will loose you power though.

Your problem seems to be inconsistency, you are probably casting the club and coming over the top. You are also probably swaying and this is creating the varying errors.

The lack of wrist hinge may be due to having too much tension in your arms and grip. Loosen up!

Try to stay more stacked over the ball, keep your weight between your insteps and reduce your head swaying back and through.

I would suggest a few lessons with a good coach may help you.

      hi
as Brian said the flat swing plane should not be what causing the slice, if you only take a 3/4 swing does that help you hit the ball better.
also whats your grip like is it a strong grip.
      cheers

        Just a quick add,

You don't hit the ball going back, Ben Hogan has a flat backswing, so do I.

        Work on your impact....!!!

Re: Advice on a flat swing please

From personal teaching experience, I know that a flat backswing could certainly cause you to have a variable ball flight including the sh*nks. To clarify, it's probably not the flat backswing per se that's the problem I'd bet it's poor body rotation and hip turn as a result of that flat swing that's the problem.

What often happens is that your arms turn accross your torso too quickly in a "flat-arm swing" so you can't rotate the torso and therefore can't turn the hips ... from there you have no chance of executing a "good" swing unless you manipulate the clubhead with your arms and hands and that of course can't be done consistently and we get back to the inconsistent ball striking & ball flight.

My advice is to get your swing looked at by a good teaching pro to identify
the exact problem/s and work on finding a solution. It may well be something like setting the club correctly when it's parallel to the ground and toe-up and turning up & around from there. Honestly, it could be that simple.

If you could perhaps post a video of your swing DTL & FO I'm sure we could give you more directed advice rather than general ideas.
