  • Pinching the ball between club and ground

OK, tell me if you have had this argument before. Saw a really donnybrook going on at another forum. OK, there are some misconceptions about trapping the ball between the club and the ground, or pinching the ball or compressing the ball with a shot off the ground. One side insisted the ball doesn't get compressed and doesn't get driven down into the ground before it is sent on it's way. The say the ball simply bounces off the club face into the air. I see it this way, especially on shots with the wedge and other high lofted clubs:

The club comes down in it's circular arc to the ball and if the swing is done correctly the clubface contacts the ball first on it's way down to making a divot just in front of the ball. There is friction between the surface of the clubface and the ball. For a fraction of a second the ball sticks to the clubface and is actually driven down before overcoming friction, travelling up the clubface where it caroms off the face at the angle determined by the loft of the club. As you go through the clubs from wedge to driver there is less of a downward component on the ball at impact and therefore this pinching is minimal to non-existant.

    hi
you also have when you use a driver or wood or even a long iron of the tee and your not using a downward swing but catching the ball on the upswing or parallel to the ground.
we have had a long debate about this on here quite recent and decided that we could not change the others ideas on this so we went our different ways without coming to an agreement on which way was right.
    cheers

Yeah, thought you might have discussed this. I agree about the driver and long irons. Obviously you are not going to "trap" the ball with those clubs.

        Jamb,

I don't have the stomach to get into this debate again but if you want some late night reading then look at this thread:

Thanks. Don't blame you if it was as contentious as the other debate I read.

I've compressed the ball with my driver - so the ground is not a necessary component.

I agree but what you are talking about is the ball deforming when impacted by the club. The ground doesn't really compress the ball, the club does.

I love the discussion you had and it is amazing how ones proof of their argument can get turned into proof for the other party's argument. Some good illustrations and articles were presented and they still don't change my mind. Oh well, it matters little to what my score is every week.

                  Hi,
I have the Leadbetter interactive dvd somewhere, thown away and discarded in the loft space. However on one of the clips it shows how the ball is compressed when using a driver. The ball sticks to the face of the driver and you can see that it physically compresses inwards. Amazing.

                    hi boggeygolfer
i thought Leadbetter interactive was the best teaching dvd i have seen to date. i don't like leadbetter much but i did like that DVD set and though it helped in a way no other DVD has.
                    cheers
