  • can someone help me find new irons

I've been playing TaylorMade OS for approx. 3.5 years...which was my first new set of irons (only been playing for approx. 4 years)...

I feel like its time for a new set of irons, but don't know anything about how to pick a new set...My handicap is approx. 13, I've been shooting mid 80's for a while now...havn't been getting much better, and looking for equipment improvement, as it may help...

I went to look at Mizuno irons...of course they felt great...but I wasn't sure which model would suit my swing...I like the Taylormade brand, but willing to try something new.

Can anyone help me, on how to fit irons to my swing - any suggestions with brands?

I suggest you head to www.danscustomgolfshop.com/registry.html and find someone close to you for a TLT fitting. I prefer the Wishon brand myself.

        hi
think its a case of going and trying every club you like the look of and also every club the the golf pro/assistant suggests.
take your time in making up your mind and try and get them fitted as that is very important. get the clubs to fit you and not you having to fit the clubs.
        best of luck

Mizuno are good clubs and as most are forged can be bent to fit

Well there you go, I didn't know that. How do they do it My experience in cast parts has been that due to the lack of grain flow and the porosity cast materials tend to resist bending and crack.

                    hi Brian
all ping's can be bent + and - 2 degrees and the have been bending there clubs from the late 60s. it is how the clubs are cast and heated, it takes longer to make a club that can be bent and a lot of club makers wont bend some makes of clubs.
with ping if they snap a club at the neck when bending then they just get another head that speck (all pings are numbered and there speck is recorded and held on file so you damage a club. just a phone call and a replacement is on its way) and they stamp on the same number on it as the broken club and put the old shaft back in.
just to add the older the ping club is, then the harder it is to bend so i take it the head ages and gets more brittle to bending.
                    cheers

Re: can someone help me find new irons

Bill touched on the big reason - the annealing (metal hardening) process. The better the process, the more bendable the head is. Now, forged heads by nature are more easily bent than cast heads, but cast heads can be bent, especially with the (relatively new) carbon steels out there. For example, the SMT 303 irons can be bent up to 8 degrees easily (I have), and their durometer wedges (also cast) I've bent 10 degrees for loft with no ill effect.

Now, the older cast clubs (say, made of 14-4 stainless) are very difficult to bend, but not impossible.

Whether cast or forged, the tough ones to bend are the bore-throughs (like Callaway irons). You actually bend the shaft in the head. It's part of the reason that you have to send your clubs back to Callaway.

                        hi lowpost
all the newer ping irons have a grove cut into the neck to help them in being bent.
if you look its angled just a little so i take it it changes the stress point.
                        cheers
