  • LPGA will have to speek english

    hi
all ladies taking part in 2009 must be able to speak some English.
all player that have been on tour 2 years must take an oral exam or have there membership suspended.
interesting in the mens PGA follow suit.
    cheers

What's the point of this? The PGA and LPGA are international organizations, aren't they? Why should they require "some English," and, more importantly, why would their members tolerate this requirement?

Norbington Hacket would have strenuously supported the proposal when he was chairman of the membership committee at the Old Royal Hackeronion and St Ann's Golf Club. He was considered somewhat progressive when he campaigned for ladies being able to watch snooker through the clubhouse windows on Mondays and Thursdays, but even he with his wishy washy Liberal views would have drawn the line at Johnny Foreigner getting in on the fun.

Sadly, we will probably never see his likes around the links again

Hey folks, in the USA I had to learn Spanish just to order a hambuger....................

My take is that if the Korean women were not playing so much better than the english speaking players, this would be a moot point. If the american players were winning everything, this topic would have never came up. I have read alot of different info on this particular train wreck by the LPGA. Regardless of what the LPGA says, my feelings are it is directed at the Korean players because of their dominance in the game right now. I don't think it will hurt the non english speaking players golf game, as long as they keep their focus on what needs to be done to win. Lack of focus for an entire tournament, (imho) is what keeps the english speaking players from playing their best golf. On the up side, speaking english by all LPGA players will benefit the LPGA to some degree with a few CEOs and their stock holder's pocket books. GJS

          hi
it seems to many Mexicans and Asian player are winning on the LPGA and maybe this will let the Americans win some games on there own tour.
i wonder if it will mean that the US open will be the only game that none English speaking ladies will get to play.
i don't think it maters what you speak if you let the golfing do the talking for you.
not heard that the same think is going to happen over this side of the pond.
          cheers

Big mistake by the LPGA. This will most likely end up in the Court of Human Rights. In this day and age, one cannot be forced to learn another language in order to work.

I think there is a state law on the books in Florida against this type of issue. Not sure exactly how it reads. But, since the LPGA is based in Florida, this might be a bigger problem for the LPGA than they might have originally thought. Of course it will probably have to be a LPGA player, or their management company to actually file a suit against the LPGA. That or maybe a class action suit by someone else. From what I have read, that has been reported so far, this is unlikely at this time, since all the non english speaking players are all on board with the LPGA's decision. It will most likely take a suspension to move this issue into the courts. GJS

Re: LPGA will have to speak English

You people are way off the mark. They are not saying that they have to speak fluent English, just be able to do a basic interview and communicate with their playing partners in the Pro Ams. You have people paying a lot of money to play with the pro's, and I for one would be ticked off if I got stuck with someone couldn't put 2 words together.
Also, the companies that put up the prize money want the winner to be able to do an interview after they win. I am getting a little tired of everyone trying to find conspiracies or racism around every corner.
The funny thing about it, is that the people who are complaining the most are the English speaking one's, when most of the non-English speaking players were interviewed, understood what they were trying to do, they just didn't want any suspension for player failing the test.

Actually - it has nothing to do with language.

                  It's an oral exam - literally. ;-)

                  (Sorry - couldn't help myself)

do they only play Pro-Ams in English speaking countries?
Why not decide that everyone needs to speak "some" French to deal with the French press/sponsors/public?

It was a crazy idea and Im glad it was s****ped.
