  • Stableford Disqualification

Can any of you rules experts give guidance on this scenario?

We played in a recent S'ford comp in awful conditions. It was raining, poor light and windy as well. I was with the group from which "the winner" came but, was not scoring his card. At the end of the round, the player and scorer agreed that the points total was correct. Cards, although fairly illegible due to weather conditions, were signed and submitted to the organisers.

Unfortunately, the "winning" player was disqualified. On one hole he had scored a 5 for 1 point but, the scorer had written 4 for 1 pt. The points total was correct but, the numbers of strokes was incorrect.

Should he have been disqualified, given the fact that this was a Stableford competition, not stroke play as such?

As I understand it, the player/marker is responsible for the hole by hole scores, the committee is responsible for adding it up. As the 'winner' had signed for an incorrect hole by hole, he was properly DQ'd.

Lowpost is correct. The player is responsible for the correct gross score on each hole. The committee is responsible for calculating net scores or stableford points.

        Thanks guys.

Unfortunately, I did think that would be the case but, as the "winner" is a good friend of mine, I was hoping there might be some possibility that the decision was wrong.

It's, certainly, made me far more aware of the importance of checking the score card, hole by hole, particularly in a S'ford comp.
