  • Science identifies the perfect swing, maybe

Given the various, sometimes heated, but I hope always well meaning discussions on here about release and other elements of the perfect swing I thoight I'd throw this one into the mix.

Using a complex mathematical equation, Professor Robin Sharp from the Department of Mechanical, Medical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Surrey, has calculated .....read on to find out the secrets ....

Prof Sharp says: "Dimensional reasoning shows that dramatic differences in performance between large and small players should not be expected on the basis of size alone".

I have been selling this story to my wife for 40 years

"Prof Sharp studied three professional golfers from the 1968 Ryder Cup - Bernard Hunt, Geoffrey Hunt and Guy Wolstenholme - whose swing action was photographed on a high speed camera."

He does not like to be hurried into a hypothesis does he

"A 21 per cent bigger player can be expected to have just a 10 per cent advantage in club-head speed."

Hmm! My Dads 21% bigger than your Dad and he has a 10% advantage in clubhead speed? 21% where did he get that number from?

On a more serious note. He may well be correct if we understood what he wanted us to do.

that being said, it is an interesting post if you take it for what its worth. but i do not think that that will help one person with their golf swing.
And mine, and I agree about its usefulness to the average golfer - I'd say the same for much that is written about the swing but thats another thread. I just posted it for general interest.

Can I also take this moment to say that despite Nicole's fine detective work (natch ) that I'm not the good Prof, but that if I was I'd defend my stats by changing the sentence to say that "to get a 10% increase in swing speed you need to be 21% bigger..." whi8ch makes more senmse of the strangely precise 21%.

                Robin,

Maybe the Prof had some input to Kinetic Linking

I tried the pancake method without much success, the brick and string method produced better results
