    New Clubs.... different ball???

    ok. little help plz.

    played my first social game today with my new Taylormade Tour Prefered irons and used a Callaway Tour i ball. Now with my old clubs Taylormade Rac OS2 these balls were fantastic.

    however today (though not on my home course) it felt like these balls were coming off the clubface with a very high trajectory. Should i go to something harder like a Callaway Tour ix, or should i go to a Taylormade TP Black.

    the sweet spot on the clubface was extremely soft and though atm i can't confirm it, it seams i've lost 5 - 10metres with these new clubs and the Callaway tour i.

    any suggestions.

    I suggest that you check your lofts set to set for starters. To see if you're truly shorter, hit the clubs with the same loft and the same ball to see.

    There's no logical reason why the ball won't work anymore. As for the softer feeling because of the 'expanded sweet spot' I've heard many anecdotal reports that confirm that the more forgiving the club the more 'blah' the feeling. Although, personally, I can get over 'blah' to not lose so much yardage on a mishit.

      You would think that the Tour Preferred irons would be "stronger" than the RAC OS 2, all other factors being equal and type of ball aside. As LowPost42 says, the more forgiving clubs, like in this case the OS 2, should have a tendency to hit "softer", although you gain the forgiveness. I've experienced that with my previous sets of severely perimeter weighted forgiving sets. It seems you have the opposite reaction.

      Perhaps, it's just as simple as The Tour Preferred irons are not allowing you to get the maximum forgiveness from off centre strikes, and you are losing distance. It would be like me using Tiger's blades. Unless you are certain you are striking the ball with the sweet spot (which with the TP's is small), you may want to use impact tape to check.

      It could be the ball, as you suggest, and researching the characteristics of the various balls may come up with results you are looking for.

        true. i knew they weren't going to be easy clubs to hit, and the shots that came off the middle felt so sweet...

        i'm going to go to my home course this afternoon and have a hit. thats really the only way i can tell. but i might try the taylormade tp red and see if that helps keep the ball flight down.

        i think i just gotta get use to this smaller face club. it's a good 10mm shorter than the RAC

          I know for myself having an old set of Spalding blades that the more compact clubhead causes me to focus more.

              well i got down to my home course today and played where i knew distances.

              as far as the clubs go. i get the same distance, but the stopping power from these clubs, especially with the PW is incredable.

              as for the ball i used. i tried the Taylormade TP Red. This ball was screaming off the drivers club face and i reckon i hit close to 280m a couple of times without putting too much effort in.. because of this i didn't get to use a huge array of irons in my bag today....

              as for the sweet spot in the irons... it's small. and when ya miss it you feel it straight up the shaft and into your hands,. but you can feel where on the face you've missed it and distance gets reduced to about 70%.

                I love the TP Red also. Several tour players use it. I seem to recall Sergio uses it and it's incredible how low he hits his drives when he choses to. It's like my skulled shots.

                No wonder you did not get around to hitting the irons, when you were in euphoria with your 280m drives.

                  umm, yeah, these clubs are good. lol... hit a 9i 150m with the wind today on a par3. unfortunately the hole was 140m away and i hit it over the back... wasn't a thin shot either.

                  i think now that i'm getting use to the clubs i'll go back and try the Callaway Tour i again... seeing i still have 5 left. lol

                  seams on miss hits i'm hitting the 3i almost as far as the 5w in my bag.... only time will tell.

                  if this is the case. i'll discard my current 5w and 3w all together and buy a 16degree club. when i know my how far i hit my 3i on a solid consistant hit i'll buy a club to hit between these distance... something that will get me around the 230m mark.

                  i'll also add. on a well struck shot there is little fade or draw in the ball unless you play for it. there is real value for money in shots played off the sweet spot off these clubs. i think these clubs are going to give me an extra 10m in distance over my old RACs

                    If you don't have one now, go for a hybrid in this area of loft. Most 2h's are in this range of 17 deg (variances of different manufacturers). The 3h's are in the 21 deg range.

                    Most of the pros have at least one hybrid to replace long irons and even woods. I believe Anthony Kim does not even carry a wood.

                    You will experience first hand what the hype is all about. Hybrids are loved by hackers and good players alike.

                      yeah, not a huge fan of the hybrid.. when i bought my 5w i was tossing up between a hybrid and the 5w at the time.. can tell u know i'm glad i got the wood.

                      it's still a while off yet before i purchase another club.. i may even get a 13degree fairway wood.
