  • Big decision coming

I have had trouble letting go of the club on the backswing. Thanks to help from the forum, I have now fixed it. Whilst I was doing it, I only used irons on the course. So, I have a full set of irons, 3 to SW plus a lob wedge. But, I also have driver, 3wood, 5 wood, 7 wood and 9 wood. These clubs I used to use, leaving out the 3 and 4 irons. I know it is probably a personal choice but I would welcome any advice that might help me decide which clubs to carry.
    Thanks
    Brian

    Hi Brian,

I don't see a problem with the clubs you've selected. As you say, it is a variable, depending on personal preferences, and how good a player you are, clubhead speed, how often you play, and your fitness. I'm 69 now, so my make-up has changed over time.

At various times in my golfing past, I've had different make-ups of clubs in the bag. I started with a traditional make-up, at that time, it was a full set of irons, including a 56 deg SW, and the 1, 3 and 5 woods. At a point, I added the 7 wood and dropped the 3 iron.

I have since also dropped the 4 iron and the 5 and 7 woods, and now carry driver and 3 wood, 5 to PW, 4 and 5 hybrids (bent strong 2 degrees), and 52, 56 and 60 degree SW's. Sometimes, I swap the 5 wood for the 4 hybrid.

In time, you may become enamoured with hybrids craze and make the switch also. You will also see I am a four wedge golfer.

Hi Ted, thanks for the reply. We are similar ages as I am 66 now. I tried some hybrids for a bit but could not get confident with them. If I go on your lines I might drop the 3 and 4 irons at this stage and bung the rest in the bag and see how it goes.

miffin if that setup is working for you then stay with it.

        as for me. i carry 9 degree driver. 5 wood. 3i - PW(47degree). 52, 56 and 60 degree wedges.

like rotator said. as your game changes so will your club selection.... i want to carry 15 clubs in my bag as i want to keep all my wedges but have an extra club between the 5w and driver... it's not gonna happen and if i do i'm going to have to sacrifice one of the other clubs...

my current course layout lets me play with what i currently have in my bag.

          Hi Brian,

I was not sure about your age. Age had an influence on the evolving changes in the make-up of clubs in my bag.

I'm in good shape and very strong, but that did not mean I could use the same equipment as I used to when I was younger. My backswing is not as long, there are flexibility issues, and my clubhead speed is reduced. I have made changes in shaft flexes over the years, and choose equipment and types of balls to compensate. Doing this, I have not lost a great deal in distance. My accuracy, course management and scrambling techniques have improved over the years.

My evolving situation with club make-up was likely the same as what you are now facing.

My long irons were resulting in low inconsistent strikes, which made me lose faith in using them, so I originally swapped the 3 iron out with the 7 wood (old man's club ). And yes, I experimented with various 9 woods (even older men's club ), which I built myself, for something I could use to hit high approach shots from a middle iron distance. I ditched this idea, when I realized my middle irons were really acceptable, and the 9 wood would be redundant. From my first use of a 4 hybrid, I was not expecting much, but it was amazing. My jaw literally dropped. I could not mess up a shot, no matter how hard I went at it. I hit that club high and straight up to 200 yards, so that ditched my 7 wood. This led me to buy a 5 hybrid, which I am extremely pleased with. I hit longer it than the 5 iron, so it nicely fills the gap between that club and the 4 hybrid.
On top of these clubs, the 52, 56 and 60 wedges, driver, 3 wood and the putter keep me legal with 14 clubs.

Well I might give the hybrids another try Ted. I tried a couple last year but was very inconsistent with them. We will see what developes.

              Hi Brian,

There were many other treads about hybrids, and in particicular, about people having difficulty with them. It seems to me that the discussions were consistent with how I would view the matter, do's and do not's. It may be interesting for you to look at them. Don't forget, these are shorter and closer to your body than woods, and should be played more like an iron. Perhaps a bit further back in the stance (a ball or two). I was fortunate I suppose, in that the very first swing was on the course, and I stepped up without expectations and whack. As I said before I was dumbstruck. I have never struck a "long iron" as well. It helps when I gained that confidence from the get-go.

                Hi Ted,

I have a very similar setup to you other than I still use my 5 iron. My 4 hybrid does serve me well, it does do a great job with those shots where you want a reasonable distance with high trajectory and quick stop.

other than I still use my 5 iron.

                  Hi Brian,

I still have the 5 iron. It's just that the hybrids go farther than the respective irons for me, so the 5 hybrid fills the gap between my 5 iron and the 4 hybrid. I hit the 4 hybrid considerably farther than a 4 iron, if I had kept it in the bag.
