  • Missing:- Lost in Hibernation

For various reasons I've hardly played at all since the beginning of October and only had the clubs in my hand two or three times in the last two months.

General ball striking has come out of hibernation reasonably well - especially if I leave the big stick in the bag. Sadly though my short game, which for most of last year was what kept me in the the game most rounds and contributed to a ppr average of around 30 has completely gone.

Fluffing, thinning, shanking; you name it I did it.

Not really asking for advice here (I'm setting up badly and de-accelerating) , rather just venting some frustration; I'd thought of sneaking out for 9 holes tomorrow but I think perhaps the practice ground might be more beneficial.

Well, I had all this advice ready, but instead I'll just let you vent.

Oh OK then; I'll take the advice

Actually, seriously, and my lead arm forearm really has stiffened up after a longish range session - presumably just not used to it, unless anyones got other thoughts.

Only advice I'll ever offer is "work hard and be good to your Mother"...

Other than that, the practice range is probably a good idea...

And this from a bloke who rarely ventures anywhere near one....

          Remember Robin, someone once said:

"Golf is 90% mental and the other 10% is mental as well..."

Your confidence in your short game is probably still in hibernation, but, some self belief and hitting a couple of short chips stiff will fix that I'm sure.

          Enjoy yourself....

          Cheers

Some sessions on the putting and chipping greens sound good to me.

              You're right and I will.

Great round in the blog btw - I tried to comment but for some reason it rejected my words of wisdom.

When my chipping improves to the stage where I get within 50' feet then I'll try some putting - come to that hitting the green rather than shanking into the scrub would be good.

As Craig says though it should only take a few that feel right to start believing again - so a little practice session has been scheduled.

Very weird feeling though completely losing what was the best part of my game 5 months ago.

Not sure what is going wrong Robin but normally it is thinning or hitting fat. Check the normal things like making sure your hands are ahead of the clubhead at impact when chipping, keep the back of your left wrist pointing at the target as long as possible, aim to land the ball where it will start rolling out not the hole, be creative with club selection.

                  Hopefully an answer there somewhere

                      Re: Missing:- Lost in Hibernation

I play alot of golf, but I don't play or practice hitting balls every day. One thing I do is to swing a club, without hitting a ball everyday. Sometimes it is my driver, other times it is a shorter club. Sometimes both. I have a weighted driver, PW, and putter that I put to use when I can't actually hit balls. Another type of golf exercise I do is long walks with my dogs. A golfer needs to keep their legs in decent shape to help with their swing. So even though a person's schedule, or weather issues will not allow a person to stay up with their golf game, there are other ways to stay some what golf ready. One of the most forgotten off season practice routines is working on one's alignment. It is my belief that this is one of the more important aspects of one's golf game that disappears first after a long lay off from the game. Working on stance and alignment with props is not such a bad idea.

Thanks Robin... Always appreciate your words of wisdom...

Have chosen not to see that front 9 as a "Day Out" however, more as a glimpse of my true potential as a golfer when all is well in my world...

                        Or something like that...

The one thing I didn't mention was that my 12 yr old son walked the course with me during that round and the last thing I was thinking about was the round itself. Apart from switching on and off when it was my turn to play.

So, my focus for the day was purely about enjoying my day with my son and being happy that he was there, spending time with me.

The golf, well, the score at least, was secondary.

For me there is much in the notion about being in your golfing "Happy Place" whenever you are on course.

                        Apologies for thread jacking....

And now it's back to our normal programming...

                        Cheers

Who cares where the thread goes, I was only letting off steam any how.

That's an interesting mental perspective. Last year I had a round where instead of two us playing singly I paired up with a lady beginner.

Apart from the fact that is very rare indeed for me to be the better player in a pair, between slowing down to her pace, chatting as we strolled around, encouraging (but not advising) after good shots, consoling after less good, the only time I thought about my own golf was switching on and off at my turn.

I'd forgotten all about it until I read your post but I played some really nice golf that day which leaves the question of how to we get to that state of mind without the external help?

                            Hibernation hey Robin,

In winter, I tend to work on my short game at home. I've got some of those plastic balls with the holes in 'em.

I chip from one room through a door way into another room. I work on trajectory and landing the ball onto a target such as a cap.

When you can't be stuffed going to the course or range try that Robin.

                            Hope all well your end.

What an absolutely ridiculous game this is.

Since I posted my first scream of frustration to start this thread I've been struggling even to get in the low nineties on my relatively easy Par 70 home course.

Played two rounds today and the 92 for the first round whilst hinting at improvement was pretty typical of the error strewn (triples and 3 putts) rubbish I've been playing this year.

Then, in the afternoon, out of the blue, I turn round having doubled the P3 ninth to realise that a bogey would have had me match 40 for the first time ever and par break it . I guess taking only 11 putts helped

Couldn't keep up that standard but despite an OOB arrived at the 18th (same as 9th) requiring bogey for a PB - doubled the fecker again (OOB) but "parred" it on the reload to match my PB.

So, on a bright, sunny day, a return to where I was at the end of last year (maybe I just don't like the cold and the wet).

Now I can press for the next stage. My new teacher has improved my ball striking, my chipping (hence that 11 putts) is coming back, so time to book a lesson on those 40 - 60 yard pitches that are currently costing me at least 4 shots a round.

As thet say in the Blogs, thanks for reading.
