I've seen it where they'll do the circles AND cut a cup so that you can 'hole out'. But putting is an absolute nightmare... I call it 'Ben Hogan's Dream Golf' - all ballstriking, no putting.

I hate temporary greens unless they are kept to a good standard, my club does not use them. We have four winter par 3 greens and tee boxes, they are real greens and tees but only used in the winter and replace three par 4's that can become too wet. This shortens the course in the winter but because of the shorter daylight hours it allows a faster round which is good.

Most temp greens I run into today remind me of the normal conditions we had to putt on in 1960s. Those greens were probably worse to putt on than today's manicured fairways would be. But golf is golf, and you play the conditions at hand. The question becomes do you use temp green putting strokes as they might apply to your short game, and/or overall handicap? In Texas where I spend the cooler months, there are quite a few courses I play that have summer, and winter greens for the same hole. These are not considered temp greens, as both are well maintained during the months they are used.

I ran into one today that gave me laugh. Nothing was noted at the club house that they were using temp greens. I had what I considered a 120 yard shot to the flag, and I landed the ball to about 8 feet. While walking up, thinking I had a good shot at a one putt for a birdie, I find a circle about 15 yards in front of the flag with a hole cut in the center. Someone before me had taken the temp green's flag, and just stuck it in the ground on the green they were repairing. So instead of a birdie putt, I was now looking at an up and down for par which fortunately I did make. GJS

Our temp greens start to get cut towards the end of the summer. I wouldnt consider them proper greens at all. They are only used in frost as our main greens were recently redone to USGA standard and are virtually immune to rain. With that in mind, we are only ever using them during winter when we have 2 X12 hole comps so they are non qualifying for handicap purposes anyway.

Im delighted that we get to play in frost but just feel that I would have as much enjoyment hitting to a circle as I would trying to putt/chip in these hazards!
