  • Brithish Open Rota

    Hi all,

Myself and three pals have decided to embark on a quest to play all the courses in Gt Britain which have hosted the opens.

We decided to play Royal St. Georges as our 1st. we also included the princes course as the Princes is right next door. we decided to play the Princes as a warm up to RSG, we played from the Medal tees at RSG which are around 30 yrds in front of the Championship tees.

It was absolutley brilliant RSJ is a fabulous test of golf. I play to 6 on my home course which is a parkland course. I managed a gross 84, nett 78 and yes it was windy. could'nt quite live with chipping and, bump and runs which are the art of playin links golf. I feel I would need to do some serious short game practice and, some to play any where near my handicap.
Hells bunker, If you find yourself in there, iam not so sure you would find your way out so easily. Its monsterous.

What a great test of golf, how the past masters Hagen, cotton etc managed to bat it around in the low 70/80s is a mystery to me, and none the less a testamant to the skills they where blessed with.

Also Normans Final round 64 in 1983 just unreal, worth noting all his rounds were in the 60s the level of skill required to do that is mind blowing

Cant wait to play our next course, sadly this wont be until next year as we have agreed to play the open rota once a year.

Thanks for reading. And of course I look forward to reading anyones story of links golf

    hi Killer
are you playing only the modern courses or all 14 the have hosted the open. i see that Deal in Kent is not that far from both Royal St. Georges and princes.
have played Muirfield once, St Andrews twice, and Carnoustie twice and the old course at Musselburgh hundred times.
i think one of the things you notice is how wonderful the fairways are and are like the putting surfaces and how deep th bunkers are.
the greens are all big and have so many hump and hollows in them. i love links golf.
    cheers
    Bill

      Bill[/quote Hi Bill,
Yes will be playing all 14. We will be picking Deal up eventually, unfortunatley we didnt have time this time. And yes the greens are amazing as are the fairways. It really is how golf was meant to be played.

I have always wanted to play st. Andrews, cant wait.

        hi killer
let me know when your coming up to play the east coast sottish open ones and i give you a few really good links courses really worth playing when your up here to add to the open ones.
if you play Mussel burgh then you should try playing a round with the hickory clubs they hire out. that really shows you how hard this course was but now with a horse race track round it it has only 7 of the original holes. two new holes to fit in with the race track.
Carnoustie is the hardest course i have ever played and its really scary if the winds blows and it the tide is coming in the you do get wind even on a calm day.
        cheers
