  • Loss of Distance

I will keep it short and too the point.

    Height 6ft 1
    Weight 190
    Age 56
    Build Solid
    Work out 3x / week
Pump iron, cardio. Good Strength and timing.

Issue. Loss of Distance on Tee Shot
    Driver Taylormade R 540 10.5 Degree
Shaft Mass Regular / w Soft Tip
Ball, Top Flight 2 pcs. changed to Precept last night

Tee Height Med to High hitting ball on up swing

Went back to basics and read Hogan’s fundamentals.
Hitting irons crisp and with character 6 170 yards, 7 165 yard, 8 145-150 yard,
56 degree wedge 90 yards max.

Tee Shot is maxed at 248-250 yards, hit it solid as heck on one shot and maxed 250.
    Used to hit 260-270 max.
Shot Character is a high shot, with minimal roll.

Help. My carry is ok my roll is short, my ball flight is high most times.

    Re: Loss of Distance

    Hi rlattajr,

Do you know what your swing speed is? It could be the driver loft and shaft is not doing it for your swing, launch angle and ball spin wise. The high flight and no roll may be an indication. When you say hitting on upswing, perhaps too much, considering the above factors? Are you possibly losing some of the flat/bowed wrist at impact (flipping)?

The change of the ball is interesting. Is the Precept brand a softer, more spin ball?

It's early in the year for golf here, wet conditions and beginning of play, which answers for lack of distance and roll here. Where are you located?

      Re: Loss of Distance

You are hitting very respectable distances, many on tour hit no longer than that.

In reality not many people hit 300 yard drives on anything like a regular basis, even if they say they do.

Rotator is correct in that you should get your driver loft and shaft checked out for your swing speed and launch conditions, you may be creating too much spin and losing roll out.

        Re: Loss of Distance

Could be you are hitting the ball "too much" on the up swing which would give you more height than you need, and less roll. Try the simple stuff (ball position, and/or tee height) first if you have not already done so. My next guess might be releasing the club a just tad bit earlier than you use to. Also was the ball change before, or after the noticed loss of distance? I played a "Precept Laddie" the other day, and my distance was one club short on all my clubs. (3W-AW) Don't know about my driver, since I never used it on that particular course, that day. GJS

I had the same problem, which I have not fully corrected. I wonder if it's better to correct it changing the loft of the clubs or change the swing.

            Re: Loss of Distance

I wouldn't worry about it for about four months, then find a real hot and windy day and find the downhill holes with the wind at my back and lots of roll and measure again.

That will be a very successful program and you should see some distance gain.

Until, then work on your short irons, chipping and putting.

              Re: Loss of Distance

you may be hitting the ball with the weight slightly on your back foot. this would also explain high ball flight and little to no roll.

I used to have the same problem, so this might help.

I used to hit the ball with extremely fast body turn. Which is, my body sort of dragged my club. It was extremely accurate, but the launch angle was like what you described.

I finished the swing standing up. Because the body was pulling the arms, the standing up motion cause the club to hit the ball in an upward motion and reduced the proper impact.

What I did was I kept my head down even at finish, and that gave me a much better launch angle and more distance.

Your problem is probably different from mine, but hope this helps.

My guess is that you have lost your LAGGING of the clubhead. What hcp. are you currently? Have you seen your swing slowmotion at impact? If you are releasing the club early...this will greatly reduce your distance.
You may want to try a product that increases your LAG.....called the pro-lag. Check it out on youtube or go to the site theprolag.com
                  Good Luck,
