  • Question on Distance and Iron Shaft Choice

I recently picked up a nice set of Ping i5 irons with regular flex shafts. Great irons for anyone interested. Before purchasing the i5 iron set I bought a single Ping i10 8 iron with stiff shaft and a Ping i5 8 iron with stiff shaft to demo and see if either club improved my game. My question is and this is what puzzles me, I'm hitting all three 8 irons the same distance. I'm not surprised that the i5 stiff shaft and the i10 stiff shaft 8 iron are identical in length but I would have guessed with my 80 mph iron swing speed I would have picked up a few yards with the regular flex shafts on my new i5 iron set.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. 137 yards with my 8 iron is fine. I just don't understand why the lack of difference in yardage between the stiff and reg. flex shafts.

    hi
do you see a difference in the the height the ball fly's, you may be launching the ball a little bit lower with the stiff shafts and a bit higher with the reg shaft. more roll with the stiff and less roll with the reg.
the I10 shaft fitted as standard is the ATW shaft and its diffrent to the shaft fitted in the I5/G5 clubs and is heaver. i would think it would have a diffrent feel also with the I10 shaft as it a diffrent weight to the I5 and is about 20 grams lighter in the shaft than the ATW.
i take it the TS-light you have in your I5 and there is not much difference in the reg shaft to the s(stiff) shaft, the x-stiff is for the 90+ swing speed but the reg and s-stiff work well with 80mph swing speed and give a med/height ball flight. the X-stiff gives a med ball height.

    cheers

Re: Question on Distance and Iron Shaft Choice

I played my first full round with the i5 irons yesterday and did notice a higher ball flight at least with the shorter irons. Also, the i5's D0 swing weight and lighter shaft weight is what helped me decide on the purchase. (Bad Elbow) I think your explanation makes a lot of sense. I wish I would have demoed these Ping i5 irons when they first came out. Thanks Bill.

        hi jimbud
the Ping I5s are a really nice balanced club and and very forgiving too.
i think you will find when you play more with them just how good they are and will help your game as you will have confidence in the clubs in your hands.
let the clubs do the work and you will see the results.
all the best with you new clubs

Confidence is high with these i5s, and growing with each outing. It's fun hitting greens again on second shots while playing par 4 holes. Our 9th hole is a 190 yard par 3 with a bunker guarding the front of the green. I've played it 3 times since bagging the i5s and haven't missed the green yet with the 3 iron.
