  • blade V cavity

    hi
with the masters winner Angle Cabrera having blades from number 3 to wedge his 2 iron was a cavity back, i see Harrington also has blades from 5 to wedge but a cavity back 3 iron. on checking a few other pros it seems like more are going for 2,3 or 4 iron in a cavity and the rest blade.
it seems the even the pros like the forgiveness in the long irons.
    cheers

Speaking of forgiveness, I'm currently gaming the Wishon 870Ti's.

Had to hit a draw yesterday around some trees, released the snot out of the club, little 5 yard draw. These things want to go straight.

As for forgiveness, what's Rocco Mediate playing? Still X20's?

      Hi LowPost,

I happened to see this recently. Rocco really wants forgiveness. He's playing the X22's. He has a natural draw, but he wants even more help to make sure he hits the draw he can count on, he says.

There's a few others on the tour, who are playing cavities.

That says a lot. More height and more foregiveness is something that not only the casual golfers want.

i think as many pro's use cavity backs as they do blades.

like others have said.. cavity backs give forgiveness, where as blades give feel.

i'm using the Taylormade Tour Prefered irons and they are as close to a blade that a cavity back can get..

however my wedges are in the terms a blade. TM Satin wedge. i think there's something about a blade that just gives unbelievable feel that no cavity back could ever give.

          hi Aussie
what i was referring to was the growing number of pro golfers that are mixing there clubs. no longer carrying a full set of blades but changing a 2 or 3 iron to a cavity back.
i have not seen any club players with a mixed bag yet most play a full bag of blades or a full bag of cavity or muscle backs.
most of the ping pros are now using the s57s and i think Lee Westwood was the last to change from his zings to the S57s.
i noticed that P Harrington does not have a 4 iron but his 3 iron is a cavity back but the rest are blades.
          cheers

            Re: blade V cavity

            Hi Bill,

The pros can do that because they get their clubs "free", whereas we would have to effectively buy a "split" set, breaking up the usual 3 -PW sets of the two models, which will be a custom order, at a premium cost.

I custom ordered a 5- PW set, because I did not want a 3 and 4 iron, and I paid the same price for a set with two less clubs. On top of that if I wanted 3 and 4 irons from another model (say cavity backed), I'd have to pay premium single club prices for them.

              hi Ted
i think ping do offer you the chance to mix your clubs but i think its only for the S57s. i think you can get them from 5 to wedges and add either the G10s, i10 or rapture 2,3,or 4 irons. not sure if it at an added cost.
but when talking to the ping rep last year when the g10s came out he said then you could have blade and cavity in a "NEW" set of clubs.
i know both you and lowpost make sets of clubs have you though of mixing clubs that you make (blade and cavity). i would think if you were making a set from scratch there should be no problem other than balanced with diffrent head.
Ping get away with the balence as they can change the weight of the head by a few grams with the toe and sole weight and the back weight.
              cheers

rotator, you are not always forced to mix your sets at a premium price. i purchased the ben hogan apex FTX irons and they are a blended set...just about a full cavity back in the long irons and it progressivly moves to a blade style for the short irons and wedges. so hopefully more companies start doing this so that we can get the most out of our clubs with just one set.

                  Hi Bill,

What I do for myself, is to use hybrids to fill in the longer irons. I have a 5 hybrid which I had bent 2" to make it a 6-1/2 hybrid. I have a standard 23 degree 4 hybrid, and also a 21 degree 4 hybrid which I had bent to 19 degrees (which would make it about a 3).

There are companies, which offer standard mixed sets. Adams Golf sells the a2 OS, which has the hybrids for the longer clubs. It's a great set for casual golfers.
