  • 3 birdies + 3 bogies + 3 pars = 36

I have to. I just have to.

I'm a 20 handicap (played yesterday and dropped 0.5 points).

I went out tonight to my local 9 hole track and shot 36. Yes, for real. No, I have no reason to lie. (If I did, it would start with my handicap!)

Opened with an up and down to 3".
Fairway, green, and a 10 footer that did the hula and dropped - one under.
Fairway and chunky second with a pitch and two putt - even.
Fairway, green, and a 3 jack from 38 feet (blew the 2 footer just slightly wide) - one over.
Slight chunky off the tee, green, 12 footer for bird - even.
Bladed but found the fairway, wide side green, 3 putt (another 2 footer that slid by right side) - one over.
Up and down with a 3 footer made for par save - one over.
Fairway followed by an up and down with a 3 footer - one over.
GIR (par 3) with 6 feet for bird - even.

I'm enjoying a celebratory Guinness right now. Golf is fun when your misses are playable!

Thanks guys - it felt pretty good even being at a place where a two putt par makes 37 - so even par is just icing on the cake.

I made a grip change (to pretty strong) as I noticed that wherever my hands were at the top of the swing is where they'd be through impact as I tend to block out the release versus actively release the club.

What I took away from this is that a) I'm completely capable and b) a nice smooth tempo with a 3/4 swing feel produces fantastic results. Trying to crush the ball gets me out over top of it (and drastically increases my chances of topping it!)

As for my missus being playable - it's a private course, Neil, by invitation only, and there's an ornate ceremony involved before play is allowed. Thankfully the membership is capped at 1 and I'm the only member!

What I like about golf is you don't have to bother with dinner dancing before and don't have to cuddle the clubs afterwards

I don't mind the dinner after a round, and while I don't HAVE to cuddle the clubs, you know I was showin' 'em some love last night! LOL

OK Ben, now the euphoria has died down, have you given any thought as to how you scored 10 under your handicap? And more to the point how you can repeat it?

With a similar handicap I've started in similar vein [par, par, bogey, par] before letting it all slip away but habe never managed better than 5 over for the 9.

One way or the other would love to hear how the next round goes - and hope its another belter.

                    Re: 3 birdies + 3 bogies + 3 pars = 36

The silly part is reading a few posts of "net" scores - I carry a 12 handicap for 9 holes, meaning I shot a net 14. ROFL.

Having given it some thought, I think some of the bigger keys will be as follows:

First, I could trust my swing. My lateral deviation was completely acceptable on pretty much every shot - meaning the ball wasn't too far off my target as I chose it. For swing thoughts, it was simply to pull back with my right shoulder, then keep my head behind the ball on the throughswing. But from the tee box to the putting green, I simply trusted myself to make the shot I had chosen.

Next, bogies weren't cause for cussing anymore than birdies were cause for cartwheels. There was no fear when I went bogey-bogey to go back to one over - I had this sense that I'd simply make a bird down the line to make up for it. Normally bogey-bogey elicits a 'well, the wheels have definitely come off' response and I lose focus.

Finally, the most tense moment came when I cold-topped my approach on 3 - having taken a 10 on a hole the day before with 3 cold tops in a row. However, I knew what went wrong (I tried to murder it and got out in front of it) and so there was no panic as it wasn't an 'unknown' problem.

I haven't played since. I've hit a handful of irons in the back 40 - but all of them have been super, clean contact and a strong draw (granted the iron I keep in the back 40 is more offset than the irons I game).

I'm quite excited to get out again and see. I really don't believe it was a one-off. Granted, the key will be to simply accept the shots as they come - just like I did Sunday night.

It may not be for a while now - I've gotta build a deck and some stairs at my cottage this weekend (a job needing done for a while now, but the local lumber yard had a sale on pressure treated wood, so I jumped on it. Still cost a fortune, though).

Not raining on your parade, but surely you mean a net 24 - not 14.
