  • Water hazard query

If You successfully play across the water hazard OK but then the ball spins back in to it, where do you place the ball for the next shot please?

Two options - either drop and hit from the original spot, or, keeping the hazard between you and the hole, draw a line from the flag through the spot the ball went in, and drop anywhere on that line, as far back as you like.

Yes, it sucks. The thing to remember is to keep the hazard between you and the hole.

Well, that's a blow. We got a par 3 over a pond. But if you just clear it is uphill and it is quite easy for it to roll back in!

So I guess the safe play is long, and the sucker pin is in front!

A small clarification to Lowpost's answer. It's not where the ball went into the water but into the hazard

draw a line from the flag through the spot the ball went in, and drop anywhere on that line, as far back as you like.

          Should be

draw a line from the flag through the spot the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, and drop anywhere on that line, as far back as you like.

            Or:

Throw your club into the hazard and go home

The point is that you must successfully clear the water. Going over and rolling back in does not count, unlike with a lateral hazard.

How do you mean? If I get over the hazard and it rolls back in, what do I do then?

I'm not sure that mdscpa hasn't confused the issue. I think he means first time not when you are playing you recovery stroke.

The point is that if you end up in a WH the relief options in effect require you to clear it with your recovery stroke.
The additional options for a LWH allow you to play from either dide of the hazard which may mean tat you don't actually play over the water.
