  • hybrids

Hi all, I consider myself very much a beginner, having only been playing regularly for 12 months. I have several questions regarding hybrids. What was the purpose for hybrids coming into being? I have heard them called a rescue club, rescue from what? I have seen them replace a 3 iron and can see that they would be easier to use, but I recently saw an advertisement for a full set of hybrids. What would be the reason for this? The add gave me the impression that they were talking about all the irons in the bag were hybrids.Could someone shed some light on this subject for me?

    Re: hybrids

"Hybrid" is a cross between a wood and an iron. It is easier to hit the ball higher from farther away...as you hit the shot with an easier to execute "sweeping swing" like the woods, rather then the harder "ascending strike" like you need for an iron. For longer irons, you need higher accuracy into the sweat-spot to get the good results, where a hybrid has a wood-like face giving you more forgiveness.

"Rescue" will be from heaver grass. The sole (bottom) of the club has the wood style which is flat, rather then edged like an iron. The hybrid will slide through it better rather then get caught up with an iron which turns the face shut to be like a "pull" from heavy rough causing the ball to go low and short.

Hybrids are really nice for all players (pro/am) alike. One of the great inventions of the 90's! Having a full set though...I only carry one (like a 5-wood) that finally replaced my 1i. As much as I loved the 1i for teeing off on narrow fairways, I can do this with the 2i and the addition of the hybrid replaced many other shots I didn't have from the rough.

      Re: hybrids

Thanks for the reply Greg, I understand now. I don't think I would ever go for the full set but each to their own. I have an old perssimon Carnegie Clarke 7 wood that seems ideal in getting me out of those heavy rough situations. It has a small head and good loft, the grass dosn't catch it much so in a way it is similar to a hybrid in results and has a pretty sweet feel to it when timed nicely. Anyone else out there use the old woods?
