  • Match Play Tips

I am playing my first match play for years next week. I am playing a much lower handicapper than myself. Whenever that happened years ago (especially against long hitters) I was daunted and virtually beat myself from hole one. So, really I am looking for tips or suggestions to combat this. Any help greatly appreciated.

    Re: Match Play Tips

If this is a hdcp round, and you get to apply your number and he his number (or something like 90% of each hdcp), then you are equal. There should be only the issue now of his length and accuracy to contend with as you tee off.

One thing that is a slight advantage for you is that you get to have first crack at the approach (assuming he is longer off the tee). This could put some pressure on him if you hit a good shot in, where he knows that you are getting a stroke. So essentially you just drove the green.

The key here is to make note of each hole where you get the strokes. Usually the hardest ones where you have a difference in the hdcps. So if he is a 4 and you are a 10, then there are 3 holes on each side that you get a shot. They will fall on the 1,3,5 hardest ones on one side and 2,4,6 on the other. Focus on these holes. Play conservitave enough to keep you in these holes at all costs, but play agressive enough to maintin pressure on him. The others will have to be straight up and there should be some losses on your side to expect. This is what you have to know is that you are supposed to loose some. But the ones you get a shot you should win some.

If this is not a hdcp round, and you play straight...then play inside of your mind. Imagine you are playing your buddy who is having a great day, and all you do is stay in the moment as best you can. Relax and out play him by making smart choices.

Great tips Greg. I am going to do 9 holes Monday. Then Tuesday is the big day. Will let you know what happens. My driver is getting me in to trouble at the moment so might 3 wood or iron and see how it goes.

Terrific Greg. It all worked. It was ding dong and I won 2 and 1. I started conservatively as I got a shot on the first so drove off with my 3 wood. I won the hole and the pressure was on him. It made a lot of difference, he made mistakes. Later on he hit back and he put the pressure on me and I really felt it and started making mistakes myself. We were level after 12 holes and my opponent got in a bunker and lost the 13th hole. This is where I managed to put the pressure right back on. I drove first on the 14th and hit a creamer down the middle. And, it was a fairytale finish for me as I have not played matchplay for years. Thanks
