  • cavity clubs at the OPEN

    hi
was watching the OPEN today and was surprised by the number of golfers using cavity back irons.
was wondering if the danger of such high rough had them moving to more forgiving clubs. even the Ping players all seemed to have moved from there normal S57 to what i think were Rapture II or I10 clubs.
did anyone else notice so many players that seemed to change. not just the ping guys.
    cheers

Re: cavity clubs at the OPEN

    Hi Bill,

I don't believe the change has come overnight. There have been a lot of the players on all tours, who have been using clubs other than blades.

TaylorMade R7 Tour irons are cavity back and have game improvement features.

Players are using the Callaway X20's and X22's.

Paddy and others play the Wilson Di9.

Re: cavity clubs at the OPEN

      hi Ted
have not noticed so much in the last couple of tournaments but was not really looking. i did see Paddy with his Wilson's and it looks like Jimenez is back with a full set of S57s today and i think he had a couple of I10 in the longer irons yesterday. Lee Westwood seems to have moved from the S57s to the I10 for both rounds. Angle Carbera seems to have a mixed bag off S57s and I10s.
i think that the "GI" cavity clubs are much closer to the results you get from blades now that as you say more pros are moving over for the extra forgiveness but still have that playability.
      cheers
