I am watching the Open Championship and the U.S. commentators discussed Harrington's swing change. I have been hearing many previous references to it and the allusions it is causing inconsistencies for him as he tries to incorporate it in play. This is the first time I had the swing change explained.
As I recall, he used to have a extended takeaway with his wrists breaking late. Apparently, the change he is making is to have an earlier set of the wrists, so he could have better consistency in the strike.
It seems to me that Ben Curtis made this change a year or so ago, and since then has been playing a lot better.
As you know, I have a fondness for the 4MM precepts, in particular the early set. My personal reason may be for the same for those golfers for making the change, viz, to make sure I have a complete wrist set in advance, as otherwise I have difficulty making consistent or complete wrist breaks under pressure of the shot. In Curtis' case, I had previously posted the main reason he made the change in the 4MM thread, basically, because he had a very standup setup, which used to cause him to pull his arms way inside.
I thought the info on Harrington was interesting, and will look keenly at his swing in future knowing this.
