  • Amazing 7 wood

I was wandering the junk shop at the local tip and found an old 7 wood, the shaft only had a little surface rust and the binding and wooden head were all good so what the hell for $2. I cleaned it up and sanded the paint off the sole and heel uncovering the brass work and the makers name. It is a Carnegie Clarke FIA EST 1902 with 25 degrees loft. After I polished the brass, sanded the wood and revarnished the head I put it behind the bar as a talking point. A little while ago I took it for a hit and WOW this thing murders anything in the rough. My playing partners laughs quickly turned to amazment at how far it can send a ball. It has a small head, the brass gives it a low COG and the brass screews in the face really get that ball going. It has the sweetest feel of all my clubs exept maybe my Cleveland launcher. It now sits proudly in my bag and I have no use for a hybrid '' rescue '' club. It just goes to show that technology aint every thing.

    Hi Peter,

    Great find.

I don't believe the early wood clubs had a 7 wood, ie. called a 7 wood. Of course, I played with wood wood clubs, when I first started to play, but they were only available up to mostly a 5 wood. Lee Trevino, the great and sly golfer, put a 6 wood in his bag to great success at one point. The 7 wood then came along. I had a Thompson Ginty, 7 wood which I loved. Later, I had a variety of metal 7 woods, the first of these I bought in the U.S., because they were still not readily available in Canada.

I played with wood clubs well into the metal wood era. Mind you, I had graphite shafts on the later ones.

Here's the old Ginty. I think it's still available.

You will enjoy this video of a young Lee Trevino showing how to hit that 6 wood

      Hi Peter,

You will be interested in this. The company is closing out after over 100 years.
I suppose your club was fashioned by CC after the then popular Ginty.

Hi Ted, the one he uses in the video is very similar to mine. There is something special about using a quality club that has been hand crafted with care and love. I wonder if there quality has changed, I really wish I needed another club to take advantage of their sale. Thanks for the info,I googled it earlier today but their site was down.
        Happy golfing, Peter
