  • unplayable lie or not a stroke ruling

At a recent Club Championship, stroke play, a player missed his par putt leaving a tap in bogey of about a inch or less. Out of frustration the player walked up to the ball and hit it off the green and near a rough lie near a creek. He played it where it lied and took an 8. Qustion is: Could he have called his ball unplayable and replaced his ball at the cup with a one stroke penalty and tap in 7? OR, Was the hitting a ball out of frustration not considered a stroke, allowing him to replace the ball at the cup for a one stroke penalty and tap in 7?

It should not be considered a stroke. He should have placed the ball on the spot from which he hit it in anger, and add 1 penalty stroke to his score.

    See Decision 18-2a/23:

    Q. In stroke play, a competitor's ball stops on the lip of the hole. In disgust the competitor knocks his ball off the green with the back of his putter. What is the ruling?
    A. The competitor must replace the ball under penalty of one stroke — Rule 18-2a. The competitor is not considered to have made a stroke.
