  • What to leave out?

I have a bit of a problem now on what clubs to carry. My course has a lot of 3 inch grass around the greens. I have wasted lots of shots by not getting out or overflying the green. So, I just got one of those little chippers and have done much better with this shot. But now I have to decide what I can leave out. I carry 1 3 5 7 9 Woods. (As I play woods better that irons) 5 6 7 8 9 SW, Gap type W, Lob W, and this little chipper. Plus of course putter. This of course is 15 so must drop one. First thought is either the 7 or 9 wood. Anyone got any better suggestions?

You probably dont need a 5 iron and a 9 wood. maybe you can decide which you get the best use from?

      Hi miffin,

I personally believe those chippers are a waste. For the times you use them, learning to use other regular clubs would be worth the effort. For instance, for chips off the fringe use a 6, 7, 8, 9, W, depending on the amount of fringe and the distance to the hole. You could even learn to use the same club, like Mickelson and others for all shots around the green, depending on how you close or open them and how you set up. I use SW to belly the ball out of the fringe and also use the hybrids and the putter.

The effort you put into learning how to create shots with the regular clubs will make you a better golfer, all around.

I can see where you are both coming from. But for this shot I have used 7 iron through to lob wedge and I have had very poor results. I have a couple of important games coming off and I do not think that I could perfect what you are saying in the time I have available. But I got immediate improvement with the chipper. Might leave out the 9 wood until I have more time to practise.

Both opinions are valid. Ideally you shouldn't need the chipper, which, as Bri is finding, being single purpose*, limits the range of clubs you can use. HOWEVER I own and have used a chipper when things were going badly purely because it gives you a breathing space when your confidence in "regular clubs" is shot. If it was me I'd dump the 5 and pack the chipper to get through the upcoming games.

            * Actually they can be multi-purpose, I once bogeyed a long Par 5 using thr chipper for all 6 shots. Don't ask!

You could also try Tom Watson's "Getting up and Down" book, it was digging that out from my collection and re-reading it that has brought my short game back after recent problems.

Hi. I eventually managed to get one of these Phil Mickleson Short Game Secrets. No wonder I am no good. I was doing nearly everything wrong! Can't wait to get down the practise area to give it a go. Although I was doing everything wrong in Phil's eyes, I did get my chipping technique from a dvd and books.

If it was me, I'd get rid of the 5-iron or 9-wood. You wouldn't need both.
On the other end of the loft scale, perhaps take out one of those wedges ...

Perhaps you should play a few rounds and make a note of what clubs you hit and don't hit - that may help identify the club that'll be soon out of a job. That's how I worked out that I didn't really hit my 4-iron very much and tossed it out.

                          hi Bri
if you play the same course most of the time then work out for each hole what clubs you would normaly use.
at my course i change between my driver and three wood and one iron so on 9 holes i'm left with a 5 iron to the green.
my most unused club is my 4 iron and most used after my putter is my 5 iron then my 7 and then my 9.
working it out this way lets you see what clubs you really don't need and i could happly play my course most days with 11 clubs.
                          cheers
