What utility degree to plug the gap between 4 iron and 5 wood

    What utility degree to plug the gap between 4 iron and 5 wood

    Hello All.

    After a long break from golf and having recently acquired some new TaylorMade Tour Burner Irons, I'm looking for a utility club to bridge the distance gap between the 4 iron in my irons to my Adams strong 5 wood so basically something that would be the equivalent of a 2 / 3 iron.
    Am I right in thinking I need a utility club with around about 20 - 22 degrees of loft?

    A 22 deg utility is similar to a 4 iron. I think you should be looking at something nearer a 19 deg.

        I don't think you can say it as categorically as that. I have a 20 deg hybrid that I hit almost exactly as long as my 18deg 5w.

        The nature of the club type means you can't just compare it by loft. You have to look at the actual distance and trajectory you hit the club.

        I recommend you go to a decent pro-shop where you can test the club in different configurations.

          He wants something around a 2/3 iron replacement. In my opinion and experience thats around a 19 deg utility which I am quite confident to suggest.

          If you recommend him going to a pro shop to test clubs in different configurations then thats your opinion which you are perfectly entitled to make, without any nit picking comments from me.

              i think what Mox ment was that diffrent shafts and shaft lenths would alter the distance of a 19% head and diffrent makes of a 19% utility club could vary by as much as 15 yards.
              if you know the loft of the 4 iron your using and the loft of your strong 5 wood then it would be easer to work out the loft you need but the shaft choice would still have to be made.
              for most standered clubs 19% sounds about right for the loft but again it also depends on shaft flex and type.

                I know what he meant Bill. I assumed that the OP was capable of deciding whether he wanted to go for a club fitting and what shafts he used.
