  • New clubs/ shop reputations

Hi all, I have been doing a huge amount of research and will continue as I won't buy for about a month. Some of the internet and ebay sellers are interesting .There are some offering great prices for well Known brands. Then the alarm bells sound when I find the seller is based in Hong Kong. The confusion sets in when one finds the ebay feedback is 99* positive, dating back to 2007.I could really use some advice here guys, anyone been burned ? Regards, Peter

I'd avoid any seller of OEM gear based in HK or China. It's almost guaranteed to be fake.

Hi Lowpost I figured as much but can not understand their high positive feedback results.
PS I have moved this thread to the ebay discussions where it belongs.
      Regards, Peter.

        Hi Peter,

I agree with LowPost42 re concern with HK and China sellers.

It's not worth the risk, as unfortunately there is bad history. That is not to say that some sellers may be legit.

Regarding the positive feedback, have you noticed that there are very few, if any, successful bids for a low price for items starting at the "bait" starting price of $0.99? Invariably, bidding will become active late in the bid period, and the winning bid will come in at close to what the "real" price of the item should be. You used to be able to track the bidders' id's and bid histories of items, bidders and sellers, and I would do that. I found there are proxy bidders. You see that a certain bidder id or actually a "pack" of the same bidders id's has bid on items in the past or currently from the same seller. These bidders, if "successful" give positive feedbacks and the seller give the bidders positive feedbacks. It's funny to see that the same bidder wins auctions for right handed and also for left handed 3 woods, and he may bid on (jacking the prices up) and win dozens of auctions from the same seller, some of the items are duplicates or conflicting (such as right hand left hand).

I used to buy and sell on ebay for many years, literally hundreds of items, and I spent a lot of time researching the sellers, bid histories of the items sold, etc. You could track and research sellers and bidders back then. Ebay removed many of the tools to track bidding history, etc and I have not used them in years.

Regarding the bogus bidding and proxies, it would be interesting to see how the clampdown by the Revenue Agency on the major sellers will affect this practice. You see, if the bid was a bogus bid by a proxy, the Revenue Agency will still consider it was a valid transaction and will tax the seller on those sales.

This is my considered opinion, without prejudice.

          Re: New clubs/ shop reputations

Thanks again Ted, the left and right handed one really cracked me up. There are quite a few in a kind of broken english reminiscent of a bad Jackie Chan movie LOL I guess I just wanted a second opinion to diswade me from taking the chance. Rock Bottom Golf looks legit so I am looking at some Wilson ci 7 irons at a very good price with free delivery. If you think of any other ligit US companies please let me know.I come off my wife's no spending ban in a week yahoo!

            Re: New clubs/ shop reputations

            hi Peter
if you also look at what else they are selling and it can sometimes give you and idea of then having a e-bay shop, this will also have a hight feedback too. most of the times they buy and sell on e-bay and you often see them like Ted says bidding for left and right hand clubs.
some of the e-bay sellers have a e-bay shop but mostly work from home or out a hut in the back yard.
it is hard to judge if the clubs your buying are real or fake as often the picture showen is one taken for clubs sold earler.
also watch out for the J-ping Rapture. that they said are made by ping in Japan. there are no irons made by ping outside the USA. i have checked this with ping and reported this a number of times to Ping and they have had e-bay remove the clubs.
            cheers
            bill

Thanks Bill, It did sound a bit sus but like I said, I could not work out the feedback. Their must be a fortune being made by catching the unwary. They seem highly organised. I will go with Rock Bottom as they seem reputable.
              Regards Peter
