seems wrong to me, being spoken of as the next major

what form will this tournament take, teams, individuals?

would have been great in the days of bobby jones,

    a tournament for real amateurs

        hi
        the Olympic motto is:-Citius,Altius,Fortius. "Faster,Higher,Stronger.
the most important thing in the Olympic games is not winning but the taking part.

the days of true amature games have gone and left it much the poorer and i don't watch it any more.
seeing some of the best paid sportsmen against some of the worls real amatures has taken so much away from the games.
how is golf or even football going to live up to the motto of "faster, higher, stronger. or that winning is not what the Olympic Games are about but its still about taking part??????.

in the Beijing games it cost $100 billion and almost 60% of that was down to the opening ceremony and payment for the 100s of people used in the arstistic opening ceremony.

the Olympics should be track and field and swimming and thats all.
        cheers
        Bill

Well it is official Golf is into the 2016 Olympics, what the heck!! I wonder what the qualification criteria will be to represent your country? I might put my hand up as an amateur sportsman I could be the "Eddie the Eagle" winter Olympics cult hero, or "Eric the Eel" Sydney Olympics took almost 2mins to cover the 100m freestyle. No doubt there will be some interesting discussions over the next couple of years

I agree it's about money and politics. Do you really think that Samaranch and Rogge care as much about sport ideals as they do their own pocketbooks. They make millions.

The stories that have come out are one thing, such as the bribes and payouts, monetarily and personal, by IOC representatives in Utah, but you know it's always been there. Family members of some members of one country have been swayed for nepotistic reasons, such as their siblings being granted special scholastic access to a prestigious university. There have be hints that sexual favours have been in play. China possibly got the vote for political reasons, and the humane disfunction of that regime have been ignored.

Bill, regarding track and field and swimming, many of the stars are making millions of dollars also. Look at Bolt, and I'd be surprised if Phelps is not already there. If there was an olympic bicycling event which he could compete in, Armstrong would be there. You know about basketball and hockey already, with the millionaire professionals participating.

              hi Ted
but with track and field you still have many true non-paid amateurs taking part but have no chance against the highy paid pro runners. even here in GB you have many amataurs strugling for funds just to be able to attend the games never mind take part and finding time between work hours. they have already cut funding to a few field sports here and cut the numbers that will take part for GB in London.
it should be Amateur's! and that goes for golf in the olympics. it is a disgrace that you could have tiger playing golf at the Olympics and it has taken the whole idea of the games and corrups it with money.
each games now is about money and not about the people taking part. the "Olympic idea" has gone out the window.
              Cheers

                    Hi Bill,

We are in agreement, if you meant summer Olympics might be restricted to track and field and swimming with amateurs only, but that is not the way it is, or will be.

Regarding golf, it could be considered that the IOC wants the Tiger money making machine on their plate. You know the influence Tiger has on TV ratings, and the incredible difference in the number of people watching a tournament, when Tiger is in contention, versus not participating or contending. This decision also draws in the big bucks thrown in the IOC direction by the golf equipment/apparel manufacturers for commercials and promotional considerations.

This would def help the declining ratings of the olympics. it would be just another version of the "dream team". I highly doubt the teams would be comprised of amateurs.
