    Frank Thomas speaks about the magic shaft

    If you don't know about Frank Thomas, google him. He is one of the top authorities in golf. He is the inventor of the graphite shaft and was the past head of the equipment section of the USGA. He relieved himself from that position, as he objected to the USGA bowing to the whims of the major equipment manufacturers in regard to equipment conformity.

    When it comes to golf, and the integrity of the game, "integrity" is a low priority with these golf equipment manufacturers. GJS

      Frank Thomas is an idiot who thinks much more highly of himself, his opinion, and his position, than his experience in the equipment world dictates.

      I'd rather listen to guys like Kim Braly, Mike Tait, Steve Almo, Kenny Lawson and Carl Hakusa when it comes to gear - you know, the guys who actually design the stuff and understand how it works.

      IMO.

        i know the the first graphite shafts were interduced into 1973 in britan and then later that year in the USA but i can find nothing about Frank Thomas inventing them,
        did he invent them or did he refine then into the shafts that started to come out in the 90s.
        what i have read he had a lot to do with the better quility shafts in the 90s but not back in 1973.
        i could be wrong but i can find nothing to say he invented them in 73

          As you know, Shakespeare was into fiberglass fishing rods in the early '60 (?), as well.

          Here's the history of the development of the graphite shafts from its infancy.

          As the article relates, I remember January and Player being among the first using the shafts. Films and videos of Player's swings in the old days show the graphite shafts in his driver. You see this in some of the old "Big Three" and "Shell World of Golf" and the like replays.

          Here's an year 2000 article by Frank Hannigan, who is well known in golf worldwide. He was also with the USGA, and he wrote this article about Thomas' parting from the USGA.

            thanks for the 3 article and that does put more light on what little i knew, i still have a Shakespeare two piece graphite fly rod from the 70s and never knew thats where the graphite golf shaft started.
            thanks again for the information and i have a better grasp of where the graphite shaft started.

              Hi Bill,

              The 3 articles are indeed enlightening. There are other articles on Thomas. He is quite an interesting person and many people do not know his history and deeds. Thomas is far from an idiot as you can see. He loves the game of golf and still plays with old blades, because he wants to know that it is his swing that is affecting the ball and not the technology. He gets out with his old cronies, just like your regular foursome. He is a traditionalist, but is not against new developments, as long as the game of golf is not compromised.
