  • Forward Press - Why Bother?

What benefit is a forward press, does it not throw your takeaway position of line?
i.e. I feel that if I forward press my club is going to be taken in the inside quite quickly... am I right?

    Spin,

the answer is simple, don't bother, it has no benifit to the swing at all. It is simply a trigger for the body to start the swing, some people kick in the left knee, some turn their head etc etc.

There is already enough to think about without COPYING someone else, do your own thing and if you are doing it right you won't know what that is unless someone mentions it to you.

I have my tounge curled on my top lip out thoughout the swing (apparently)........

    be yourself.

    Ian.

I agree with Ian it is not somethign that I would intentionally add to my pre-shot routine as there is enough to think about...

On the subject of it altering your takeaway... it likely would.

Re: Forward Press - Why Bother?

        hi
with me it's what start the swing, as Ian said, it a trigger. i tend to push my right knee more towards the ball to stop my hips swaying back on the back swing at the same time i push my hands forward a little and that starts my back swing.
i have went to the range and hit 25 ball with and 25 balls without the forward press and it just feels better to me to have a forward press as everything seemed to fall into tempo better. there is not real diffrence to the shot's only to the feel of how to start the swing.
i think if it help's then use it if not then don't.
        cheers
        Bill

I tend to disagree with the general concensus on this one. With a slightly stronger than generally prescribed grip, and a more rotary movement (either high or low plane) the forward press at the start of the swing gets the moving relationship between clubhead and hands correct straight from the off. It can help get the clubhead up on plance isntead of having it roll low around the wrists.

It's a good thing if you want to include it. No detriment at all, really.
