  • Cored and sanded greens

    Hi guys,

My club just cored and sanded the greens and we have a club medal day happening next weekend. I have very little experience playing on sand and I was hoping someone could give me the heads up on how to modify my approach shots and putting accordingly.

    Hi Chrisptopher,

Not an easy one... the words "hit and hope" come to mind. That said here are my experiences with playing on top dressed greens.

If the dressing is wet (if it has rained, or they have watered the greens) then the ball will get slowed up a lot due to an obvious build up of dirt on the ball. Like a snowball effect.

If the dressing is dry and it is a fine dressing it can have the opposite effect in that the ball skips across the top of the dressing with very little resistance.

Both are tricky to play on. The main problem is not so much the speed change but the inconsistency between them. Some may get big bobbles some may not.

I would strongly advise to spend a good 10 - 20 mins on the practice green before play (providing it has been dressed to) to get a feel for the pace.

Regarding approach shots, the only thing I have experienced is that cored greens can be a little dryer than normal due to the draining of any surface water, this can mean approach shots can take bigger bounces than normal (but not always)

    Hope this helps a little.

Greg's pretty much nailed it - it's not putting, it's plinko.

It should have healed pretty good though, in a week - so it won't be so bad. But expect at least one odd hop per putt - and don't give anything. Even 2 footers become dicey on punched greens.

In addition to what has already been posted, it has been my experience that sanded greens will cause green side chip shots to check up more. I'd get some short game practice in, a few days in advance just so you have an idea what to expect. GJS

          Thanks for the replies.

I have a stableford comp on tomorrow, so i'll try to keep the suggestions in mind and see how it goes.

            Hi guys,

I see what you mean by it being a lottery. The greens were so unpredictable. I tried to keep all the suggestions in mind while playing but even with that it seamed so random. I hope it is better by Saturday.
