  • My swing video

Since I was brought back here momentarily (for now anyway), I thought some of the non-haters might like to see how much my swing has improved in 1 year only going to the range, no rounds played at all.

I don't have any old videos for you to reference from, but I am sure a few of you will remember what my so called "swing" used to be like, if you could call that a swing.

    http://s411.photobucket.com/albums/p...rent=open1.flv

This also shows that throwing the clubhead from the top can still get you decent swing speed. My 9i here is only 88mph avg with 93mph max and my 3w is 109mph avg with 113mph max. Granted this is only an el' cheapo radar reading so it could be off a bit, and sometimes it picked up my ball speed I think because it was reading 160mph and my head is not THAT big lol. A HUGE power/speed leak is from my right arm straightening too early and that is not intentional (I consider this an early release and it is bad), and I am working on that still, but the clubhead being thrown from the top is intentional. I think it is bottom pro level right now, but not quite were I want it. According this this site http://www.pgatour.com/2008/tourname...dar/index.html it is up there with Nick Watney, whoever that is or this site http://www.pgatour.com/2008/tourname...ats/index.html Dustin Johnson, again never heard of him... So I take it they are bottom level pro's. But I want to be in the top echlon of pro's with 125mph swing speed before I even begine to work on the rest of the game. I think I wil be there next year if not sooner.

Its an online forums, so comments are allowed, but non offense, I am kind of 'set in my ways' if you didn't know me back when I was a 'more active member'. Just be prepared to back them up and realize this is not a traditional swing and certain things I do don't mix with common teaching. I will try to be respectfull of your comments as I have always been, but don't give me some BS "Leadbetter said this" nonsense or you will get that **** thrown right back at you.

    golfinguy28,

The swing looks to have improved a lot since last year if I remember correctly. You appear to generate great width in the swing and it all looks to be in fine balance. You seem to be moving in the direction you are striving for - keep up the good work.

gg28 - Your swing appears to have elements of the Mike Austin swing. Is this intentional?

        Re: My swing video

thanks greg, it is miles away from my old swing. The legs/feet/knees/hips are a hard beast for me to tame, that is the main difference.

It is funny you say "moving in the right direction", I don't think you realize that is a Mike Austin pun .

His thoughts on the traditional golfer is that they would clear their left hip (move it back away from the ball), where as he would drive the hips towards the ball, so yes, I am moving in the right direction in that sense as well .

        kbp,

well, you can read above and that will answer you question . When I see that swing and hear of the epic distances and swing speeds that he attained and he is not gorrila-like as Fister and some of those guys are, I can only deduce that he had the most efficient golf swing and attempt to emulate it as close as possible and not to mention his accuracy and consistancy was top of the line as well.

          Re: My swing video

Another austinologist comes out of hiding.....

I think your weight might be too much on your toes, that is why your left foot comes up so much in the BS and the right foot lifts a bit early in the FS. You left leg also looks tense and that is why the left foot comes up, the muscles need to be relaxed in the BS and the turn will drag it up more than the lifting you seem to do.

Your right shoulder needs to drop more in the FS, yours goes out a bit more out, I think that will help with the right arm, as your seems to pronate a bit in the FS, but I think that is more from the early release than it is actual pronation.

You also seem to fan in open in the BS, try to keep the face looking at the ball longer, as this was one of the keys to Mike's accuracy.

Other than that, its not bad, definatley Austin inspired, free flowing and smooth, supple quickness.

Perhaps you are aware of these sites, but if not, they may be of help.

            http://www.mikeaustingolf.com/phpBB2/

The poster named Squish is very detailed and descriptive in his posts. He interprets and explains a lot of the principles from a different perspective. IMO, he provides accurate info consistent with Austin.

I’m not an Austin expert, but I agree with the comments above about the fanning and the lifting on the backswing rather than the counter-rotation that Austin emphasizes. Shauger’s "catching raindrops"

Again, I’m not an expert, but you might want to look at your right side compression on your downswing pivot. It looks like your "pulling" from the front side versus detaching the right side (compressing, squishing, whatever) and letting the hips swing like a pendulum on the return pivot. Stepping with the right while throwing simultaneously from the top. This might also help maintaining your forward tilt spine angle versus a bit of jutting the hips out at the ball.

You should know that since we recognized this as Austin-esque that you are probably heading generally down the right track for this swing.

              Re: My swing video

              lgs and kbp,

I agree the right shoulder needs to drop more, that is deffinatley something I am working on. I have never heard of a stepping with the right while throwing, just "step and throw". I always assumed this was with the left.... I will look into that more, do you have any video references for that?

And my weight is on my toes, that is an old habit I am still working on.

I am not on either of your pages with the left hand/arm though. I really don't like shauger or dang or bowden's teachings. Dunaway is the only student I like.

Some believe Austin changed his swing throughout life, and he might have I can't say for sure, though I think he just learned better ways to explain what he knew all along that he was doing.

He spoke of antagonist muscles (ie. tricep/ bicep) will return to the state of rest faster and more correctly than you could ever purposfully do. I pronate my left arm in the BS and put my left hand into half palmar flex and half radial flex (up and right) so that in the FS I can just relax and my hand will naturally pass through my adress postion and at the same time my left hand goes into ulnar devation (a must before and supination occurs) and then it can go through dorsal flex through the ball (an down, left, and up) around where the wrist meet the ulnar bone so the hand can freely swing and pendulum around that point. It is quite easy to do but hard to explain which is why I think he "changed his mind" as the years went on.

My right/hand arm does the same thing, but the opposite direrction.

I have seen squish's swing video, he has his own entupretation of Austinology and it really works for him. He loves the thought of the tiba and fibula and the ulnar and radias twisting around in a torsion force. Though I respect his philosiphy I would need to have lessons with him and him only as I think mixing a few of his swing thoughts (especially not in person) with Austin's could confuse. But I think he is right behind Dunaway in my scale of closest to Austin.
