  • Curved driver faces

With the slight curve on the driver face, I have never worked out why if you hit the ball on the nearside to you it does not always go left and then if you hit it on the other side of the face, why does it not always go right? Weird.

    Re: Curved driver faces

The answer is gear effect. The face has bulge (the curvature from heel to toe) so that when you toe one, it helps to draw the ball back in - heel side adds some cut spin.

If there was no bulge, it would fly more "like you expect".

I'm having trouble with that explanation; not saying it's wrong--just don't understand this "gear effect" theory even though it's talked about by others. As well, iron faces are perfectly flat, including the long irons.

Being hollow, I suspect the face of the woods (metals) bends inward on impact. Maybe the convex bulge offsets some of this inward bending?
Sound logical? Then what the hell do I know-I can't hit them straight anyway

The attached picture shows the effect of gearing without getting into the detailed physics.

That seems to explain it then Brian. But, that is exactly opposite to the spin that I thought it might put on it. Shows how thick I am.

You're not alone here Bri (Miffin)-seems opposite to what one would expect...Wil
