  • Can't get em straight

The latest thing I need to cure is my approach shots from 80 to 160 yards! Irons 6 to 9 always end up left of the green. They seem to start off reasonably straight but curve round to the left. The funny thing is that if it is a head wind or I am slightly farther out and decide to use a wood, then that approach shot is straight. The clubs were fitted for me so doubt it is lie angle but if I could get an answer, I could save lots of shots.

    Re: Can't get em straight

    Bri,

look first at your grip. With mid to shorter irons I find it best to use a neutral grip and keep my wrists very loose so that they hinge and unhinge by their own momentum. A strong grip may work well with longer clubs to assist the clubface closing but may be creating your draw/hook with shorter irons.

There may be other reasons for your problem but this is the first place to look.

        Hi Bri
as Biian said but i would also check your alignment using a club to check your feet and also another club to check your aim.
you might be opening your stance the shorter the shaft you go.
        cheers

Due to frost snow ice and waterlogging I have hardly played since this post. However I was out today and I am still doing it. But as I am getting on a bit, I had forgotten what was suggested! Can't get out again now til next week. Will have to try and remember then.

Check the clubface is actually aiming where you want.
One degree out at address could mean ten or fifteen yards left of the pin.
If your clubface is slightly closed, you will hit small pull hooks (as you describe) the loft on the irons can be an opticle illusion, hence you hit your fairway woods straight.

Pick your target, draw a line back from that to your ball, pick an intermediate target on that line no more than an inch from your ball, set your clubface to that point, build your stance around that.

            Hope that works!!

Well if I could cure it I am on to saving lots of shots. So, hoping to get out Monday and will post the results.

              Thanks

                Re: Can't get em straight

You might want to check your shoulder alignment, and make sure your feet, hips, and shoulders are all in line with each other. A golfer can have their feet correct, but if the shoulders are closed, or open the feet are of little help. Ball position also plays a part in the shoulder alignment. A ball to far forward in the stance can open up the shoulders. A ball to far back in the stance can close the shoulders. The shoulders pretty much control the swing path.

A club face square to the ball target line, but with closed shoulders will cause the ball flight you are describing. A lot of people hit draws from this position.

                Just food for thought. GJS

Valid point and thanks. If I fail with the first couple of suggestions will give this a careful check. Dunno when now, it's snowed again here!

Just as I thought. Snowed off. Can't test things out today.

                      Re: Can't get em straight

Think that is sorted now. I tried everything suggested. It appears that I was addressing the ball with a slightly closed club face. Optical illusion of some kind. I got them straight yesterday or slightly right of target but still a straight flight. Also I had more height and I was dropping a club length short. So must re-assess my distances now. Thanks to all.

                        Re: Can't get em straight

This thing reared it's ugly head again today. I lined up differently, also tried opening the face a bit to what I thought was correct. I could then get them going great but all went right of the hole although straight. In desperation, I tried a slower swing. Bingo!!! Everyone after that was much better. So, I do not know what the actual fault was. I know that I was trying to hit too hard but whether that put me off line or I closed the face or what, I have no idea.

                          Hi Bri
maybe when you were swinging faster! your club head was getting ahead of your hands before impact and closing the face. with you slowing a little you have it back in time with your hands leading the clubface.
                          cheers

Could well be that Bill. Hope it don't happen again. But, I might have the answer to it now.

                              Hi Bri
one off the best things to do when things start going wrong and ape shape on the course if to slow down a bit. you find that you may drop 5 or 10 yards but you will find the fairway more often and it can make what could be a bad day into a OK day.
it can be the diffrence in hitting a 5 rather than a 8 and a few holes like that soon add up.
                              cheers
