  • Fat or thin

    Hi guys,
I am having real problems with my long irons. As the title says I am hitting them perfect then fat then thin then around we go with very unpredictable shots. The closest I can get to predicting a mistimed shot is that my wrists feel "sloppy" at the top of my backswing, then it seems like when I am supposed to be whipping them through at the impact zone it becomes uncoordinated and once again "sloppy". This result is happening to at least half my shots in practice and causing me to play tentatively in games giving me terrible results. Can anyone shed some light on this, I have myself in a mess over this.

    Regards,Peter

Theres a posible answer in your own question.

The closest I can get to predicting a mistimed shot is that my wrists feel "sloppy" at the top of my backswing, then it seems like when I am supposed to be whipping them through at the impact zone it becomes uncoordinated and once again "sloppy".
Your already partially aware of the "sloppy wrists" which is good; try increasing that awareness throughout the whole swing.

Hit some balls at the range, not thinking about anything, not caring where the shots go, just being aware of your wrists as you swing (how sloppy are they? when do they start going sloppy? when do they finish going sloppy?)

Once you are totally aware of what your wrists are doing throughout the entire swing; hit some more balls, same format, not thinking just being aware, maybe firm up the wrists slightly, does that feel more controlled ?
Try making the wrists even sloppier, how does that feel ?

Try the same exercise again, this time being only aware of the clubhead, and how it is behaving throughout the entire swing.

These awareness drills are designed to improve your understanding of whats happening as you swing, hopefully a better understanding will help you be more in control of the process.

It is crucial though as you swing and hit balls, there is no thought on controlling movement or mechanics, you just "let go" and let the actions in the swing send messages to your brain, not the other way round.

Thanks Adjani, I think the progressive fault finding drill would be of great help in trying to understand when and where it is happening. The only problem I can see is that when I start concentrating on what is going on behind me my shot is screwed. but I will certainly give it a good go when it stops raining.

Dont quite understand that, you dont have to physically look at the wrists or clubhead, just be aware of them, trace them in your minds eye. It may take a bit of practice, but if you can be aware of whats happening throughout the entire swing, where things are, whats doing what, it makes it much easier to adjust.

Hi Adjani, Yes I think the optimum word there is practice. I have tightened up the wrists at the top of the swing, I believe the club face is rolled to open. It was hard to pinpoint this as my back swing was far to fast. So this part seems OK, now I am looking at the downswing and although am finding it hard to pin point the release I know the club face is square because I am dead accurate. I am leaning towards it being OK, so that leaves me with correct technique and coordination of the downswing and body. Now, I haven't just been relying on you for information and assistance, I have also read dozens of articles on swing, and still find myself somewhat lost, I probably need a lesson but we only have one pro within 1 hours drive of here and he charges like a wounded bull. As with most things we find someone who explains things just right and there you have it bingo! we click on the answer. So please stick with me on this, I am finding it very helpful.

          Regards Peter
