  • What is the fascination of golf

In an email exchange, I having bemoaned the fact that I was off to work rather than the course, a good friend asked the following:

"What is it about golf??? I’ve never understood – one of the things Mike and I had/have in common is a failure to comprehend it’s fascination!!!"

I guess she thinks its a good walk spoiled. Obviously we don't, but in a single sentence what would your answer be. What is about golf that makes it so compelling? The friendships? The challenge?

Let me know and I shall pass on our collective wisdom.

The object of the game is just too simple: A ball at various positions needs to find it's way to a single point. It is up to you to get it there. No one else, can help you. You are given some rules to follow and if you break any, you are penalized...possibly disqualified from continuing. Others can join in the challange, either as a friend or an adversary. You are able to keep score for your own gratification, or to prove who is better that day. Ultimately, your ability, imagination, temperament, focus and guile are tested and put on display for all to witness...even if along the way you know others are watching from the other tee, or from beyond this realm.

You either like this or you don't.

Golf is the living embodiment of hope springing eternal - from the abject beginner who is sure he can hit the ball straight - and once he does, is compelled to try and do it again, to the lifer who's searching for it to 'all come together again' and go low.

The first tee is full of promise, even a poor tee shot follows a second full of promise - of getting it close for an up and down, or a miraculous shot that finds the green. Even when you've played 18 - that next first tee holds all the same promise the last one did. It's a game that can only be played, never won, never beaten - it's a splendid metaphor for seeing just how good you can be.

Using just a single sentence, I think GregJWillis pretty much answered the question when he posted "the object of the game is just too simple.". Tough to top that one when you think about it.

But to play along I might add this to the list. Golf is a journey from point "A" to point "B" with a lot of mental, and physical side trips involved.

Golf in one sentence? Impossible. GJS

Golf is a lot of walking, broken up by disappointment and bad arithmetic. ~Author Unknown

It's easy to see golf not as a game at all but as some whey-faced, nineteenth-century Presbyterian minister's fever dream of exorcism achieved through ritual and self-mortification. ~Bruce McCall

They say golf is like life, but don't believe them. Golf is more complicated than that. ~Gardner Dickinson

The sport of choice for the urban poor is basketball. The sport of choice for maintenance level employees is bowling. The sport of choice for front-line workers is football. The sport of choice for supervisors is baseball. The sport of choice for middle management is tennis. The sport of choice for corporate officers is golf. Conclusion: The higher you are in the corporate structure, the smaller your balls become. ~Author Unknown

There is one thing in this world that is dumber than playing golf. That is watching someone else playing golf. What do you actually get to see? Thirty-seven guys in polyester slacks squinting at the sun. Doesn't that set your blood racing? ~Peter Andrews
