  • Bad Shots Good

I have been traveling with an old buddy of mine the past few days, and of course playing golf has been part of our routine. Perhaps this has been a topic of discussion before, but how many of you have ever needed to purposely hit a bad shot to get out out of trouble? No, I am not suffering from old timer's disease, nor have I imbibed too many beverages tonight. What I mean is, have you ever needed to hit a hook, slice, or maybe needed a topped, worm burner to get out of trouble? I know we talk all the time about how to cure these bad shots a lot, but I seldom see any discussion about these bad shots actually being useful. Obviously I would not include shanks, or fatties as maybe being useful to one's game. Then again, I once hit a ball into the cup using the hosel of my pitching wedge?????

This goes back to my thinking that a golfer should know what causes bad shots in order to score better. Making bad shots work for you is just another element of the game. Food for thought? GJS

Yep, I use 2 bad shots. One is if I am in the trees and need to keep it low, I purposely top the ball. The other is if I need to draw the ball around a tree. I pull my right foot back a few inches and the ball always seems to turn right to left. I am not an expert at it but usually have some degree of success.

      Not consistently.

Last year though I went into a round having developed an awful hook with my hybrid. Naturally enough I left it in my bag for most of the round until we came to a situation just like GJS described.

Poor tee shot and blocked off from the green, I announce that I was going to "draw" it round the trees on to the left hand side of the green; hilarious laughter from playing partners, one of whom claimed he would he would streak though the club house if I could produce a draw to order.

Out came the hybrid , sadly whilst the ball flight was correct (i.e hooky) I left it a bit short so my mate ducked out of the streak but the look on his face was a picture. Never did tell him how I did it
