  • Teeing up in the wind.

I was always told to tee your ball low when playing into the wind. Just watching the golf on TV, the commentator said to tee it high. That puts less spin on the ball. Which is the correct way then do you think?

It all depends on your natural launch angle. If your normal tee shot is high, I would tee it down to keep the ball from ballooning. If your normal shot is low, then you can probably get away with a higher tee, as long as you don't end up hitting it at a higher angle causing ballooning. Spin rate affect is minor compared to launch angle (in my opinion). I always try to play the ball back in my stance with a slightly lower tee when into a heavy wind and play for a low launch. I reduce my release into impact and this reduced the spin rate enough. The biggest problem with a high launch in a wind is that the wind will have more time to affect the ball...either slowing it down or knocking it off line. The lower you get it the better off you are at keeping it in play.

Ah, that's it then. I will stick to what I always do.

The issue is not how high you tee the ball but where you strike it on the clubface. A modern driver has a certain amount of vertical bulge to the clubface, this increases the effective loft of the driver from bottom to top. The next issue as Greg mentions is the angle of attack, an ascending blow will create higher ball flight.

A ball struck lower on the clubface with a fairly level angle of attack will fly lower as less loft will be effective at impact, this will be true whether the ball is teed high or low. I find it easier to make a more level attack angle and catch the ball lower on the face if I tee it high and slightly further back in my stance.
