  • Is my grip wrong?

    Hi,

I have and have always struggled with raw and rubbing hands after playing golf for any period. I am right handed and use a conventional grip. The area that gets raw is (if you looked at my hand palm up) the left handside of my fourth finger by the knuckle facing my little finger.

Is my grip wrong? Am i holding the club too tight?

You should see my callas there. You might have some slipping around during the swing where the grip and the friction/forces are just apart of you swing.

Without going into too many issues around trying to fix the swing to save your hands, one thing to check for grip pressure is to have someone try to take the club out of your hands...when you feel the club start to slip away you are at the right pressure. Scale from 1-10 (1 slipping out of your hands, 10 having blood dripping from your ears), you should be a 2.

Thanks for the advice! I will try to relax my grip. Do you think grip size could be an issue? When i play racket sports i tend to have bigger grips than most.

Sure. A too small grip will give you less area to naturally hold on and you could get areas in your had that does not match up well.

I have an extra tape wrap put in my grips to make them slightly larger to suit my hand.

I have the same callas and problem as Greg. I use a mid size club grips and have moved to a reverse overlap grip where the index finger on my left hand sits over the little finger of my right. This has stopped the rubbing.

I only have one troublesome spot on my fingers. It's located on the outside edge, facing my thumb, of my dominant hand, on my pointer finger. The outside edge just in back of my finger nail. Obviously it is being caused by the grip twisting on that part of of my finger, but then again I do tend to grip the club very lightly. When it flares up I just wrap a piece of tape on the area, and wear a second glove till the skin cracking heals up. My wife says if I did not play/practice so much golf, it would go a way on it's own. Yeah, like that's going to happen. GJS
