  • Can a Strong grip be too strong?

    Hi Fellow Fanatics

I recently had a golf lesson, and my coach told me he wanted me to have a stronger grip for both hands. He is right, as at the top of my swing, my club face was too open with the toe hanging down. My issue is, I feel that when your grip is too strong on the left hand, I find it harder to close and square off the club face with my hands.

Am i putting too much emphasis on feel, as ultimatley the correct release should be a body release and not one where you manipulate with your hands? I am keen to stick with my new grip, should I ignore the perception that it is harder to square the club face with a strong left grip? Or stick at my new grip and commit to the change?

    thanks for any feedback

Hi and welcome to the Asylum

Many people find it hard to close the clubface either through gripping too tightly or just not being able to rotate the face back square in time. For these people a body release is not possible and some form of wrist rotation is necessary, I would guess this applies to the majority of golfers.

If this is your problem then taking a stronger grip will make matters worse. Try gripping the club much lighter and focus on releasing your wrists much earlier in the downswing. During practice get the feel that you want the ball to turn right to left, exaggerate it for a while. Feel the toe of the club rotating past the heel as it goes through the impact zone.

    I hope this helps.
