  • My best round so far, but not happy with my yardages.

    Hi guys,

I just broke my personal record on my home course. I'm a 20 handicap and shot 86, which I was very happy with.

What I was n't so please with was my yardages. Due to the fact that I've not been hitting my irons very far, (140 for my 7 iron) I was using extra clubs on my approach shots. I was hitting some great shots, giving myself some birdie putts -- most of which I missed.

But, I guess what I'd like to know from you guys, do you feel I should be working on getting greater distance, or simply settle for what I have? I squeeze some good yards out of my woods, so I can attack the greens from 210 yards and in, I just feel a bit ... weak with my irons.

Please let me know what you think.

    Cheers.

It would be good to see a video of your swing. I suspect you are swatting your wrists at the ball in an attempt to get the ball in the air and maybe keeping your weight on the back foot, this will increase loft and hit the ball high and short, normally out to the right as well.

Try working on keeping your hands ahead of the ball at impact and use the picture of hitting the ball under an imaginary tree branch five yards in front of you and four feet high. This will encourage you to hit down at the ball and transfer your weight forward.

    Hope it helps you.

      Hi Brian, thanks for replying.

I've been trying to keep my hands infront of the club head, and I believe that I am, and coming down onto the ball. I think that my problem may be may my flat, wide swing plane (A plane I began using to erradicate a slice with my woods). The trouble is, I'm very happy with how my irons go, ball flight, control and accuracy, it's just the distance that lets them down.
So I think that even though I am trying to come down onto the ball, I may be sweeping it anyway. The thing is, do I change my swing plane (and have two swings, one of the irons and one for the woods) or do I just put up with my short distances?

Having said what I've said, I should point out that I haven't actually tried a steeper swing since I changed my swing a year or so ago, but back when I was slicing my driver, I was also squeezing a good 160 yards out of my seven iron (about 20 yards more than now), allbeit no where near as consistant or straight as I hit now.

      Cheers,

I'm with Brian - video translates the best on the internet.

But it certainly sounds like a weak, flippy impact position; or it could be something as simple as you're hitting with your arms.

Well done on the PB, I hope your handicap cut isn't too savage.

I'd have said 140 to 150 with a 7i is pretty much standard for an average club golfer; sure extra distance would be nice to have but if you missed loads of putts in a new PB then I'd say don't worry about your yardage for a while and spend some time on the greens.
