    Re: Handicaps

Your handicap is based on your best 10 scores of your last 20 games. If you play on the same course constantly it is quite simple to determine. If you are playing on different courses it becomes much more difficult.

When comparing different courses the slope and the rating come into play to determine your index. With an index you can have a handicap at any course. Your handicap can change from course to course, possibly even from White to Blue to Gold/Black tee boxes depending on the course and how it is rated.

      Re: Handicaps

Well, the American handicap system is ridiculous, but what I understand is that they take your best 10 scores from your last 20 rounds, and perform a calculation on it.

So, for Americans anyway, you need to know the calculating algorithm, and plot a score for one under your HCP. From there, projections are easy.

        Re: Handicaps

The British system seems to be different from the USA.

If the course scratch is 70 and your H/Capp is 18 then 88 is a level par round for you(white tees only in comps) for H/Capp.

for every shot you score under your allowance you are cut 0.25 of a shot and every time you shoot above 0.1 is added.

        two examples.....

        First comp you shoot 84 gross this is 4 shots under your allowance of 88............0.25 X 4 = 1 shot....new H/Capp 17

second comp you shoot 85 or above, 0.1 is added to your new H/capp of 17 making 17.1

Everytime you don't beat your H/Capp point one is added 17.2...17.3...17.4..upto 17.5 then you play off 18, once on 17.5 it takes 10 bad rounds to reach 18.5 you will then play off 19 and so on.

Remember one good round and your H/Capp tumbles, it takes a lot longer to fall back down.

Good luck with the winter practicing.

        Ian.

p.s ask what happens if you shoot one shot better 0.2 is cut (why I don't know) I believe when you get below 5 only the County cut your H/capp not the club.

          Re: Handicaps

My exact handicap is 15.1 and my course par is 69 and CSS (competiton scratch score(competition par)) is also 69.

If i shoot 84 nothing happens to my handicap as 84 - 15 = 69 so level par.

For every 1 stroke i am below 84 I get cut 0.3 (why I'll expalin later) and if i am above 84 I get 0.1 added on to my handicap.

          example:
          I shoot 82.
          82 - 15 = 67 so 2 under par
          2 x 0.3 = 0.6
          so, 15.1 - 0.6 = 14.5 so still playing handicap of 15 but exact handicap is 14.5

the reason for 0.3 coming off my score is my handicap is category 3.

below 5 - category 1 so 0.1 off every stroke under par (after handicap)
          6 to 12 - category 2 so 0.2 off
          13-18 - category 3 so 0.3 off
          18 and above - category 4 so 0.4 off

every golfer regardless of handicap only gets 0.1 added on to their handicap even if they are more than 1 stroke above par after handicap.

hope you understand the method of handicapping now.
