  • weight lifting

    Good morning to all,
I am wondering if there are any weight lifting exercises specifically designed for increasing club head speed? Are there other exersises designed for golfers only? Thanks in advance for any info you can share.

    Re: weight lifting

I've been using a TotalGym for years now, it gives me better range of motion and added strength. I also do some weight work at the gum but the TotalGym really works the best for me for golf and tennis.

The major areas you need are forearms (strongers wrists, harder/faster/stronger release), increase flexability (to increase coil) and shoulders, legs, abs and back (to create power).

Get a good workout book (your local library anything by Ken Sprauge is usually good) and look up excercises for the following.

Latissimus Dorsi (the sides of the back)
Quadratum Lumbarum (the base of the back)
        Trapezius (the upper back)
        Deltoids (shoulders)
        Rotator Cuff (forearms)
        Triceps and Biceps
        Quadriceps and Hamstrings (thighs)
Gastroc Soleus and Gastroc Nemius (calves)

pick and choose the exercises you find easiest and most stimulating for yourself (no sense doing things you dont enjoy at all at least ones you dont mind doing you might stick to)

          Mulligan Al,
I too have a Total Gym. Being in the physical therapy field, I know its benefits on stretching and strengthening for rehabilitation. I have used it sparingly over the last few years, mostly using free weights, kettlebells and the Bullworker. How do you use it? Exercises, sets/ reps, etc. I have used the method described in the book but was wondering how you may have used it to benefit golf. Take care.

I use a lot of the exercises from the book, especially the one where you sit upright on the side of the bench and 'like a golf swing' draw the handles across your chest.

I also do a lot of the circular movements while lying on my back, these movements really help me stay lose and strong across the shoulders. The exercise where you sit with your feet toward the top of the machine and bring your head toward your knees really stretches out your back muscles. It's a great machine for golf I'm glad I got it.
