Hi guys, Here's a question for you all. What effect does the air temperature have on ball distance. It's just that I went to the diving range the other day to work on some new swing thoughts yet my distance was dramaticaly redused yet i was hitting the ball well . Ok the temperature was 4' C is this a factor.?

Cold air is denser therefore thicker than hot air. this is why hot air rises. When it is cold you will find the ball travels less distance through the air. The temperature of the ball is also a factor a bit like a squash ball although nowhere near the same effect.
In cold weather its better to play a low ball game as the temperature rarely affects the distance the ball runs. When it's chilly I tend to take an extra club for every shot.

I'm with mizuno - under 10*C, I take one more club, and I'll often play a 'ladies' ball - or any other ball with low compression. It helps reduce the freezing effect.Comment

Mizunoman's spot on. Colder air is more dense and therefore increases the drag on a golf ball reducing the distance it flies. It's also worth noting that increasing air pressure and humidity also increase air density.Comment
