Re: Vijay & Hall of Fame

[QUOTE=kingtc] but to the a lot of the world the U.S. is the home of golf, /QUOTE]

I dont think I have ever heard quite so much rubbish expressed in 15 words in my puff!!!!

America has done what it does with every other sport. Take it and twist it into something not quite what it was before because the original version was too difficult to understand. Look at baseball (an expensive way to play rounders if you ask me, and as for the "World Series" sheesh) and Gridiron (1 hours TV for 1 minutes play and all those pads, Rugby never looked so gay)

As usual its the world according to the PGA Tour. They are quite possibly the most blatant example of the schoolground bad sport, the one that, when he is losing or doesnt agree with the rules, says "My ball youre not playing".

The UK is the home of the game, the only reason we dont have a HOF is because we are savvy enough to realise that $15 to watch old videos and see glass enclosed artifacts is a real swizz after we spent money to go and see the stuff when it was being used in the first place.

Go on kingtc, answer that and stay fashionable...

Let's face it, in the UK we just don't go in for Hall of Fame type stuff. If we did there'd be one for football (erm, soccer to our Transatlantic colleagues) and rugby. We just don't have the same hero-worship mentality.

I notice on the Hall of Fame website there's a cute re-creation of the little bridge over the burn at St Andrews with a panaromic shot of the clubhouse and hotel in the background. How naff is that?

        D,

I agree. The UK is the birthplace of golf. I said "to many people." Kids in America don't know were golf came from what it's roots are. They are exposed to the PGA Tour on TV which doesn't really do golf justice. The Golf Channel even focuses mainly on the PGA Tour. And as we all can atest to, TV dectates heroes and legacies. The heritage of golf can sometimes be shrouded by all the American courses and players that are on TV. Americans are bombarded with this day in and day out. We (as Americans) are a very "needy" people. We need to celebrate our heroes and be able to have a tangible link to the past. I still believe in this day and age that the HOF being in the U.S. is largely a money play for the elites of American society.

Now that I think I have answered fashionably. Don't insult our games. Yes, most American sports derived from European sports, but we made them our own, not because it was to hard or we didn't understand them. We as people are cultured and socialized at very young ages. Accept and embrace your games and traditions as we accept and embrace ours.

          D,

And just as a side note. Don't confuse birthplace and home. Birthplace is a concrete term, inarguable. However, home is relative. Home refers to were something or someone resides. In this multi-million dollar contract age it would SEEM that golf has a new home. As I don't see how the UK can compete against the US in that department.

            Travis,

Because the TV and sponsorship $$$ comes from the US, that is where the PGA tour is played. Please don't mistake these courses as the world's best courses and the USA as golf's home.

              Gord,

Point taken. It was my intial OPINION that the HOF was in the US just for that reason. Money. By me mentioning the word HOME seems to have offended a few people, and I apologize. Both yourself and D have also said or hented that the PGA Tour is an American Event. That is really what I was refering to as golf. America is the home of the PGA Tour. What I was trying to convey is that many people in my HUMBLE OPINION associate the Tour and Golf as the same. Therefore making it seem as though America was the home of golf. With Tiger being so popular Americans claim him as our own and by doing that claim golf as our own. Because he is the only thing they associate with golf. (I.E. Babe Ruth-Baseball, Joe Montana-Football) With the exposure of the PGA Tour on American TV and the lack of other events like the European Tour, it could easily be assumed by some individuals that golf is an American sport. EVEN THOUGH I AGREE THAT IT IS NOT. I can't seem to say that enough. So agian, I apologize if I offended the sensitive nature of some individuals. Please, have a wonderful golf day!

I'm from Canada, Darryl from Scotland. Even though there is a few miles between us (not to mention a little pond) we tend to have the same views It's nice to have a place like GTO where 3 people from 3 different countries can have a passionate discussion on a global sport.

Want my two cents worth?????????????? propably not BUT Scotland is the birth place of golf without a doubt. BUT I believe the USA is now the home of golf.

I think there guys over recent years have set the standard and the mighty us$ has enabled us all to see more of the game
Told you you wouldn't want my two cents.
In short I agree with Travis

As for the original subject I think its a joke who gets into the HOF now.Although growing up I heard the names Ben & Tom an awful lot. Why?????????

Re: Vijay & Hall of Fame

Just as a further note we in Australia hear more about the ryder cup than the presidents cup.

We also believe the US tour is the hardest to make it on, if youre not good enough for that play the European tour, if your not good enough for that play the Asian tour and if you can't make it there play the Australasian tour.
The courses in the US must be so different to the courses here. We have some great golfers here that can't cut it in the US but not many American golfers come here and burn our courses up either.
Has anyone played on both that could share some light on this subject?
                        Graham?

Re: Vijay & Hall of Fame

Well, yeah ... I'd go along with that. The PGA Tour is definately the most difficult because not only do the worlds best players play on it but the depth of talent is staggering.

Under that at about the same level I'd put the Nationwide and European Tours.
                          Under those the Japanese Tour
Under that the Asian, South African and Australasian Tours
Under those the Challenge Tour, Tour de las Americas, the Hooters Tour and the Canadian PGA Tour

Until you actually go an experience the PGA Tour, the Nationwide Tour and European Tour you can't understand the level of golf they play. Seriously, you have to experience it.

I've experienced it as both a player and coaching "observer". It's scary! Watching on TV isn't good enough to see how well they hit the golf ball.

I've only played the minitours in Europe and America and South African Tour. I'm a zero on either of the tours I played and I've been a scratch player or better for more than half my life! But, I've always focussed on teaching and learning the game rather than being a tour player.

Well said. Might I offer the augment 'televised'? The US is the home of televised golf.

Sorry guys, but I love kiwi's analogy... I'm sure most of us don't call our birthplace home anymore (respect to ricky and DNA).
