  • Lefty Phil!

I would like to hear your thoughts on Phil Mickelson switching to callaway x-18 irons the week he shot 59 and now has posted 60 and 62 in the last 2 weeks. Do the clubs have something to do with it? or is Phil just in the grove right now. Either way that is three amazing rounds of golf, most pro's will never shoot 3 rounds that low in competition let alone in the span of a few weeks. Let me know what you think!

    Cheers;

    Re: Lefty Phil!

If it's the clubs then I'm going out to buy some this week!

I read an article in Golf Digest, I think, and it plotted the stats of top pros that had switched clubs. With the exception of Tiger at the very peak of his powers when he swtiched to Nike, all of them experienced quite a marked drop off in performance before recovering their form and in many cases exceeding what they achieved before.

Remember Phil switched to Callaway just before the Ryder Cup and had a stinker! I imagine he's put in a lot of hard work to recover his form and is now reaping the benefits; his confidence will be sky high.

We've probably all experienced it at one time or another no matter how well or badly we play golf. You play a few poor rounds, work hard to eliminate the problem and find you're playing better than ever afterwards.

He isnt playing the X-18s as I heard, he is using what Callaway are calling the X-Tour. which I havent seen and probably look something like the Titleist 690CB's (not dissimilar to the 731 PM's I bet).

PH, Phil had a stinker at the Ryder cup because Captai Buffoon paired him with his least favourite man on tour. No chemistry, no friendship and more than likely Phil knew that any mistakes he made would be crucified compared to any made by The Great Tiger Woods. No player changes irons instantly. Phil would have been using them for weeks beforehand and it was probably just Callaway heaving money at him to use them in the Ryder cup because they thought the Yanks were a shoe in for the win and that Mickelson would have been star turn because he had such a great season up till then.

As for the numbers, Phil has always shot real deep when the mood takes him. The main thing now is that he holds form for longer these days and can blitz it for three or four tourneys in a row now. Good on him. I would like to see him be the next number one for no reason other than it would be Tigers greatest nightmare come true.

          Re: Lefty Phil!

I didnt know you had his ear yourself Big Man.

Are you trying to say that of all the people that could become world number one Mickleson isnt the one Tiger fears most?

          1. Phil is American and would take a lot of sponsorship dollars away from Tiger were he the better player.
          2. Phil is better loved by the crowd than Tiger. This may well be because the crowd always seems to go with the underdog (which Phil has always been in comparison to Tiger) but I think its the same thing as John Daly has.

Els and Singh are the best around just now (save for Els' rather poor putting form of late) if Els commited himself to the USPGA tour more he would probably have stolen a bit of a lead on Tiger and wouldnt be far behind Singh.

I dont hate Tiger, I just find the hype that surrounds him laughable. He's not a quarter of the player Nicklaus was or Palmer or Player or Hogan were, yet. He may yet be and I wish him luck, truly I do.

Don't ever make such a baseless accusation against me again. I dont hate anyone I dont know and I certainly dont know Tiger and I'm pretty damn sure you dont either.

Take a Nytol and sit in a darkened room, Big Man, I will try not to get on to Tiger too much next time (not that I was aware I had in the first place).

            Re: Lefty Phil!

lol im cool sitting where i am mate.

Im not arguing who is better etc, pretty much agree with what you said. Jus found it weird how u said "Phil knew that any mistakes he made would be crucified compared to any made by The Great Tiger Woods". Not sure thats how it worked out.

and if you find the hype laughable then he obviously didnt introduce you to golf, or become ur first favourite golfer etc..that he has done for so many others playing the sport in the last 5 years or so. Even most pros know what, and admit what, he has done for the tour. And u suddenly know he is the unpopular guy on tour..lol u the man. Your era may well of been nicklaus, hogan etc. But id still say 1/4 of tiger is some where near anyone who has ever lived. Who cares tho? youz can get back to the original issue now...........

              Re: Lefty Phil!

              big man,

I didnt say he was the most unpopular guy on tour so get the facts straight.

I like Tiger for the most part. He's one of the great players of the last 20 years for sure but he has only done what Johnny Miller would have done had there been so few truly top class players around when he was blazing across the courses of the world. Tiger had the great fortune to arrive when there were no huge stars around to challenge him, much like Michael Schumacher in F1. The stats remain that he is on course to match Jack Nicklaus' career haul in majors, but I cant see him winning his first and last 24 years apart. Again I would like to see someone get close to that and Tiger is certainly the best equipped of the bunch just now. I would like to see how he would have faired toe to toe against the greats of the game. I would hate to think what Faldo would have done to him in his prime especially when you recall how twitchy he got when Bob May matched him shot for shot at the USPGA. As for Phil (remember the thread lol) I dont think he will win all that many majors, he is the Palmer to Tiger's Nicklaus. Always there always dangerous but just lacking that final bit of luck needed to finish it off. He will win one again, no doubt, but I dont think he will manage to reach even Seve's total. It's a shame but really he should have at least 5 by now and he has one. He may be destined to be this generations' Greg Norman.

I would disagree that Tiger has contributed to the rise in the popularity of the game as much as you claim he has but thats a side issue (maybe we should start a thread). His contribution to the tour is the rise in prize money and not much else. He is indeed a big draw but its mostly the whoopers and the hollerers looking for any kind of US win. The other tour pros just cant beleive their luck that a season of mediocrity will still net them a million bucks. They indeed have much to thank him for.
