  • My new best shot & how good are pro's?

Some time ago, there were posts about:
    1. your best shot
    2. how good are pro's?

Well, I have a new best shot as of today . It was on the 6th hole today in a tournament. I was 135m out, slight uphill, pin 42ft on and 16ft from the left. There was a slight breeze and I was lying on a slight downhill.

I pulled a 7-iron and punched the ball starting middle of the green with 20yards of draw. It took off right at the middle of the green, drew nicely, pitched on the green, ran all the way to the back and according to the crowd hit the pin, horsehoed out and stopped 15cm from the hole.

Just as I planned. That moved me to 4 under after 6.

Now for the second half of the post.
It was a serious shoot out today, it was supposed to be 36 holes but yesterday was cancelled due to the high winds. 64 of us playing for all the glory in 18 holes of 'deep' scoring ...

I was 4 under after 6 , 5 under after 9 (front of 32) and was right up there. I ended up with 66 (-7) which I thought was a great round. I was very happy, but I did make bogey on 17 and only parred the par 5 18th.

It's a tough course, not long but very undulating, very narrow and small greens. Lots of trees lining the fairways.

Where did I finish you rekon?
    Top 5? Nope
    Top 10? Nope
    Top 20? Just ... T17th!

    And this is a mini-tour!!!!! For G*D sake ... T17th with a 7-under par score!
The winner shot 63, there were 2 64's and jammed 65 and 66's. I tied with 4 others at -7.

My prize money: $450! For a 7-under 67, I just make the top-20, I still can't quite figure this out...

Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, Graham. That type of thing was always likely over 18 holes, thats why so much of the serious stuff is 36 or more holes, less chance of a lucky round winning.

I dunno, $450 for 17th sounds ok, 1st prize of the opener here this season is a £150 voucher! And I know I will probably have to shoot the lights out to get anywhere near that.

I'd be delighted if someone gave me $450 for playing a round of golf. Play 222 rounds like that in a year and it's a cool $100k!

Seriously, it sounds like you had some fun and you can't put a value on that. I enjoyed myself at the weekend and I shot a truly awful 95.

Yeah, $450 for a days work is good pay but the thrill of competing, the thrill of the chase and the pressure of seeing your name on the leaderboard and fight to keep it there ...

That's golf ... no money can replace the burn in the spirit.

Pity 16 guys beat me and I played so well!

Now you know how the entire PGA felt when Tiger was #1.

Oh its hard for some- managed to squeeze 18 holes in before it went dark. Played off tees that had no grass on them and winter greens- and your moaning about wining money-Id give away the Mrs for a chance of playing on good courses more than twice a month!- Know what you mean though- my cousin's a pro- A guy called Michael Welsh - anyone heard of him?- he tells me how tough it can be!

              Hi teachingpro,

you dont seem to be getting too much sympathy here but I agree with you , if I shot 6 under my handicap in a competition & only came 17th I'd be really peeved . I think in regular stableford competitions if anyone shoots 41 or 42 points they should be in with a real shout of winning the competition . I really question the validity of some peoples handicaps when you get the captains prize won on 46 points (maybe this is just sour grapes from someone who will never score like that !).

Congrats Graham. It's too bad putting numbers up like that didn't get you a bit further up the leaderboard, but some days are just like that. To all of you giving him a hard time because he gets paid to golf, take it easy. They guy is just telling you how difficult it is to win a tournament and you're all over the guy. As far as I'm concerned, if I had Graham's talent and played a great round and finished T17, I'd be upset as well. Keep up the good work Graham.

Thanks Gord, you're a nice guy!

It really is tough out there. To shoot 7-under and at the end of the day not even being on the leaderboard is tough. But that is the way these days, epsecially when it's only over 18-holes. We have to go for everything, no matter what and I just didn't pull it off on 16,17,18.

I don't think I could have done much more than I did ...

It's not the money, I don't care about that - I play for the competition and the "buzz" I get out of being there in the heat of it. I'd play even if there wasn't money.

Imagine scoring 7-under on a medal round and 16 guys beat you. Geez, man that hurts!

                    Hi Graham,

That sounds awesome man! Don't worry to much about what the opposition did. Golf is always about competing with yourself and shooting -7 under the sircumstances is phenominal! Enjoy it.

By the way, what course did you play and what is the tour that you played on?
