    stint meter

    Can someone explain exact what the 'stint meter' is? I know it is how you refer to the speed of the green, but I was wondering if there an actual device that measures this speed? Is actually a measurement or an estimation?

    Stimp meter

    I think it is called a "stimp" meter rather than a stint meter. Its a contraption that is a meter long and is raised a foot off the ground where the ball sits in a groove. The ball is released down the groove on a flat part of several greens around the course and the average distance in feet is the rating of the speed of the greens. Example, if on average it rolls 8 feet before stopping then the greens on that course at that time are rated 8 hence the expression "the greens are running 8 on the stimp meter". I am not totally sure of the dimensions (1 metre long etc) of this device but maybe some of the pros could clarify?

      Stimpmeter

      The Stimpmeter is an aluminum bar, 36 inches long, with a

      V-shaped groove. The ball release notch, located 30- inches from

      the end that rests on the ground, is designed so that a golf ball

      will always be released and start to roll when the Stimpmeter is

      raised to an angle of approximately 20 degrees. The distance

      traveled on a flat portion of the green in feet is the number given.

      This is an average of several greens.

          Now, the real question is how many of you know how your living room carpet stimps?

          Mine just got replaced, and it's a raised/lowered pattern, so it stimps at about a 2.

            But ok, I'll bite ... My living room has hardwood floors. Probably stimps something like 18. Thank god there's no high plateau!

                Not sure how I missed this one. The tough part is finding the specs - the angle of the V in the stimpmeter is fixed as well as how high up it goes and how deep the notch is. Manufactured stimpmeters are designed so that a golfball sits in the notch, and will release when the stimpmeter is raised to the proper height.

                  Dave Pelz sell his own stint meter on his web site, it said to be better then the standard one use on tour.
